Here’s my annual birthday post. Feeling this one taken by @emmasilke , such a special shoot, just the two of us, in her light-filled studio. What I remember most was talking and talking and talking, getting to know each other and every thing flowed from that connection. That’s the inspiration for this next year. Let’s all embrace truly connecting, listening deeply, and look for the ways to be together in meaningful ways that might elude us if we’re don’t slow down and take the time to truly see one another. James Turrell often speaks of “going inside to greet the light.” Having been raised in a Quaker community myself, sitting in his Skyspace at Friends Seminary felt like a homecoming. It’s more than architecture; it’s the metaphysics of space, light and stillness meeting in the silence.

Lately I’ve been thinking about literary provocateur Kathy Acker and her belief that the body can be shaped with the same intention as art, strength as a choice, not a contradiction to femininity. The idea of building, whether that be muscle, skill, or discipline, is about showing up with purpose. All meaningful practice has its essential collaborators and trusted advisors. Celebrating my dearest Jim on his birthday for his ability to love fiercely, build people up and stand for what’s right, never stealing people’s dignity, consistently using his voice to speak out against injustice, fraud and deception and the inhumane treatment against marginalized people and communities, which has reached epic proportions this year.
