It is important to remember weather and climate are two different things. In 2009, a lobbying firm forged NAACP and Latino nonprofit letterheads to pressure American Congress to oppose a clean-energy bill. Imagine impersonating a historic organization, with half a million Black members… all in order to fight against technological progress.
💰The scheme traced back to a coal-industry coalition (ACCCE), who paid nearly $10 million for lobbying efforts supervised by PR firm The Hawthorn Group and Bonner & Associates. This included sending fake letters to Democratic lawmakers during the bill’s debate.
🔦 When the forgeries came to light, lawmakers were furious, the targeted groups demanded accountability, and the scandal became one of the clearest examples of the fossil-fuel industry’s astroturf tactics blowing up in public. Bonner & Associates claimed to have contacted all the politicians and organizations they had defrauded to apologize. A month later it was found they actually didn’t do that.
