Not a long time ago, a brilliant artist earned my attention when hearing of an acting role that sounds like music to the ears of an undocumented human. Starting from the end of 2023, I was selected to get a taste of someone else’s life in Flanders and Brussels, then embarked onto the surreal experience of wearing one artist’s ID: identifying as Karina Beumer (@karinabeumer ). Many weeks of 2024 (and later) let the flow of time and professional advice guide us towards making a film documenting the replacement of a human in real life. With selected candidates, we participated in the creation of a series of live performances, portrait drawings, a spacesuit costume, and more on-screen surprises, wherever our shared identity occupied an art space. The original Karina Beumer occupied an orchestrator position, for example in charge of dispatching or coordinating one or another Karinas living and working in lieu of herself/themselves. Another secretive position, which allows to play and rewind real-time cinematic recordings, hosted the director’s chair and control room. On role-playing days, in front of my in-character eyes, the expensive doors of renowned venues opened up, never questioning my lack of e-ID, at the sight of my embodied assignment. Life-changing keys that unlock a creative existence, blessed in-person by her unreplaced mother, were received with no strings attached, every month, until when the stars decided where to go off course. ----- In September 2025, the documentary "De Originele Karina Beumer" premiered at the Netherlands Film Festival (@nff ) held annually in Utrecht. In November 2025, our film travelled to a large screen in Belgium, where I could move my body restrained by legal borders, during the Brussels Art Film Festival (@baff_brussels ) at Cinematek BOZAR (@cinematekbe ). The second Belgian release occurred in December 2025 during Sound Image Culture (@soundimageculture )’s year-end screening at Beursschouwburg (@beursschouwburg ) in Brussels. ----- This one-hour long film can be streamed, as wished-for from any comfort zone, at the online platforms of VPRO (@omroepvpro ), NPO 2 (@npo_2 ) and NPO Start (@npo_start ). -----

Two textile artworks exhibited and made in Kortrijk (by Chris-Armel Iradukunda [daqhris]) 1. "Travel Document for My Photos" The travel document features 32 pages stamped with my identity and visual artworks, i.e. my Burundian passport pages and black-and-white Belgian photographs. It was inspired by the standard version of a refugee's passport. Its visa pages archive my trips on foot in and around various Belgian locations for an 8-year-old digital photo project. 2. "Gemini's Handheld Autoportrait (This Is Not A Google Tablet)" An emboidered replica of a self-portrait drawn by Gemini 2.5 Pro with a pen plotter machine (assisted by Martin DeVido). Instead of framing any human's pixelated selfie, my fingers selected a digital mind that is grown in the dark, born out of human data, and trained by Google DeepMind. Presented as a handheld tablet, the portrait is an indicator of self-awareness in the mind's eye of a non-human genius whose labor services are accessible for free from many Google tablets. As a human with a legal work permit suspended for years, the growth of nontaxable digital workers leads me to many questions without answers. _ _ _ _ -> All artworks were made @budalabkortrijk where I and other 9 participants to @open_design_lab spent 5 weeks learning and working with textile/fabric as material of designs to be exhibited @wonder_festival . The lab welcomed us in collaboration with @designregiok and other cultural sector organisations. -> The 2 artworks can be seen on the ground floor of 'Cohousing Ten Broele', inside the ODL group exhibition room. It's open since Oct 17 to Nov 2, from Thursday until Sunday, 10h - 18h. -> They were crafted thanks to scraps of @kvadrattextiles and machine-assisted emboidery and laser-cutting in one week. -> Merci to @alexander_de_coninck and @green_fabric_bxl for their expert advice and guidance. _ _ _ _ #WonderFestival #KortrijkArtWeekend #awalkaday

I am so proud to present you Chris-Armel Iradukunda and his installation and web-project "God Bless the United States of Aliens". Our Bosnian-Herzegovinian pavilion is a modest home in Venice, but it is even more important to have a guest room for an artist with no papers. Chris-Armel grew up in Burundi (which has no pavilion at Biennale), and now living in Brussels where we share a studio together. Come tomorrow, Friday May 8 at 20h to hear the full story how the solidarity Burundi pavilion found its place in Bosnian-Herzegovinian pavilion!

As a participant to @open_design_lab in 2025, I've made my first steps into textile art. The first artwork is titled: "Travel Document for My Photos". It's currently exhibited during @wonder_festival (Thrusday-Sunday, 10am-6pm) in Kotrijk, Belgium (until November 2). The artwork is to be found inside a room situated on the ground floor of Cohousing Ten Broele (one of the venue of the regional design festival). It was made at @budalabkortrijk during 5-weeks long workshops organised by Open Design Lab. The passport-looking artifact has 3/4 of pages stamped on with black-and-white photographs from the awalkaday.art Photo Collection. Its first pages are decorated with copies of pages from my official identity document, a Burundian passport. In total, there are 32 colourful pages, filled and stitched. All pages were crafted with scraps from @kvadrattextiles fabric. Laser cutting and emboidery of the document took place in the last week and half before the end of the textile-themed training sessions at the fabulous fablab in West Flanders. Next to the textile booklet, there is another artwork of mine, in the shape of a computer tablet. Titled "Gemini's Handheld Autopotrait, and subtitled "This is Not a Google Tablet". It's linked to another recent and ongoing artistic project that is related to machine consciousness and digital sentience. The 2 artworks can be discovered and touched in the same room of a group exhibition showcasing what was designed by participants to ODL Textile 2025. These fellow designers originate from different countries and have in common a background as refugees, asylum seekers or newcomers to Belgium. Two weeks left, 8 days remaining... The entrance is free and open to all. Thank you, Kortrijk, and every institution, organisation and individual who contributed resources in order to have these artistic creations come to life in a short time.
