ShotDeck x ASC Lookback: Alexis Zabé, ASC, AMC @wabizabi on The Florida Project
Born in Mexico City, Zabé grew up around photography and gravitated organically toward cinematography. A two-time Ariel Award winner for Duck Season and Silent Light, he later brought his observational sensibility to U.S. features including The Florida Project, Tyrel and A Fistful of Dirt.
In director Sean Baker’s @bakermovies 2017 feature, which examines life just outside the gates of “the most magical place on Earth” through the perspective of a 6-year-old child, Zabé and Baker followed their intuition to shape the look. They combined 35mm film for interiors and day exteriors with digital acquisition for night exteriors, creating a tactile, sunlit palette grounded in texture and immediacy.
