For thirty years, Rooftop Films has been sustained by the passion and generosity of our community.
Every contribution made, every membership activated, every donor reward purchased, and every share sent helps ensure that bold independent cinema will continue to light up summer nights in New York City with us for decades to come.
Thanks to the overwhelming excitement around Rooftop’s next chapter, our 30th Anniversary Kickstarter campaign has earned one final encore through this Monday, May 18th, at 5 PM EST—and it all comes down to this.
Join us for the absolute final stretch.

Last month, @sammylquan and I spent the weekend in Fresno, CA and checked out the @historic_crest_theatre_fresno , a beautiful family owned historic movie palace. The theater opened in 1949 (and formerly owned by Mel Brooks) is known for its ornate decor, large screen, and elaborate neon sign. This is definitely worth a visit for any movie lover.
Like most movie palaces of yesteryear, the theater needs support to return to its past glory - check out the last photo. Currently the theater shows classic films on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. Hopefully in the future, they will have their film projectors back up and running and make many necessary repairs and restorations to the building. Their nonprofit THE CREST LEGACY FOUNDATION is helping to make this happen. There is currently a GoFundMe account to help out with this. You can find the link on their insta page.
The Kew Gardens Cinema @kewgardenscinemas is an independent movie theater in the heart of Queens, NY. Located at 81-05 Lefferts Blvd, definitely worth the visit, especially on Wednesdays when all seats are $5.
The Kew Gardens Cinemas on Lefferts Boulevard, originally built in 1935 as the Austin Theatre, is a restored six-screen art deco venue in Queens, NY. It has transitioned from a local single-screen theater to an art-house in the 60s, a pornographic theater in the 70s/80s, and was restored in the late 1990s by Harvey and Andrew Elgart.
