As BHM comes to a close, I wanted to acknowledge my grandfather, Albert W. Johnson— who happens to be Black History.
⠀
The first black man to have a GM dealership in America, gained from selling cars door-to-door across the nation- during the Jim Crow era.
⠀
He also was an advisor of Chicago's first black mayor, Harold Washington, aiding in the expansion of O'Hare airport- also working with Eugene Sawyer.
⠀
Known as the first large donor to Barack Obama's (legend says it was between him and Oprah) senate race, he ostensibly paved the way for him to become America's first black president.
⠀
While talking to Barack, he told him about how he had to use his perseverance to sell cars door-to-door- with people often telling him that it's not possible to do. He would often reply "Yes, I can" and used that as a mantra to carry on. @barackobama used that mindset in that anecdote to create his "Yes, We Can" campaign slogan.

As the years go by, your impact, ethos, and candid remarks make more sense, inspiring me to take the appropriate approach to art, music, and any endeavors that I could visualize. No amount of artworks, albums, poems, installations or objects could equivocate the consideration that you’ve given me, to acclimate me to a world that would stamp those that appear as I do as lesser, incapable, and restricted upon first glance, raising me around children of all races, creeds, religions and denominations. I love you, and miss your physical presence, while always being grateful for your continued presence throughout my endurance through immersion.
❤️
I see that my A Ü T O/M Ö T O R presentation video from IDFA Doclab (@idfadoclab ) in the Netherlands has been doing the rounds online due to some of the topics and people named in the vid, shouts to those talking about it and the project on YouTube, Reddit, etc, discussing the basis of the project, how I got my start in music, Chicago underground hiphop, and how my practice vacillated to creative coding, to how the entire process to music immersion has been disrupted by its creation.
If you can find it online lmk what’s your fav part

More than just a love letter to listening to the radio station that opened my oculars to my pathway (@whpk_88.5fm ), and to the city that birthed me, my influences, and my vision, this serves as a testament to how galvanized and focused the citizens of the city are, no matter the task. I’ve shed many many tears for my city and the people in it, knowing that while our culture reverberates around the world, the only way it can continue is through the people.
