Dusting off the olā gram cause Iāve been doing a lot of futzing in Procreate Dreams and I have thoughts! āØāØāØ
First of all, itās a lot of fun. Now that I understand the interface, navigating the timeline feels intuitive and very suited to the iPad. The fact Iāve just been able to cosy up on the sofa and animate is so satisfying. Itās got so many options, especially in regard to in-software comp, so I can see it having a lot of potential for full short film projects, which is exciting. And for the price point, I reckon itās a no brainer; I canāt think of such a fully fleshed out animation software for less than 20 quid with no subscription. I feel like itāll make animation a lot more accessible to a lot of folks, and thatās a very good thing. As someone whoās currently working on bulking out my hand drawn showreel, Dreams couldnāt have come along at a better time.
That being said, how the hell did this thing launch without the lasso tool?!? Likeā¦ what??? I feel like there are a few blind spots like this, especially in regard to frame by frame animation, probably cause they spent more time focusing on the āPerformā aspect of the software. Itās not a deal breaker, and I bet there will be quality of life improvements down the road, but to have no lasso tool on launch as a hand drawn animation software is genuinely buck wild. As it stands, itās probably better to use Rough Animator for initial passes and then import those elements into Dreams.
Another thing is that it crashes. A lot. Not to a point that it made it impossible to work, but enough that I did get rather frustrated at times, especially when itās trying to process a bunch of effects and stuff.
TLDR; Itās not perfect, but for the price and convenience itās a pretty damn good animation software and Iām psyched to keep using it!
