We asked
@patrik_wallner to rank his All Time 10 favorite clips.
Patrik has documented skateboarding in over 100 countries, including North Korea, Turkmenistan, Yemen, Madagascar, and every country in the Eurasian landmass, some of which are now defunct like Nagorno Karabakh. Most trips have been with his Visualtraveling crew, a rotating cast of global characters self-funding their way. Patrik makes his signature skateumentaries, thoughtful documentaries exploring countries untouched by international pros.
His work has always been about location, so he chose to focus exclusively on lines. Rather than crouching on a stair set with a fisheye, he prefers weaving through scenery, enjoying a tango with the skater, pedestrians, and architecture that makes a line engaging.
The skating in his work is top tier, but it’s often less important than the 48-hour train rides, culture shock, food poisoning, and geopolitical navigation required to arrive at these destinations. Whether it’s the streets of Pyongyang, a mosque along the Silk Road, Yemen during a Houthi uprising, or the Palestinian side of Israel’s West Bank barriers, the story is in the scenery.
Beyond filmmaking, Patrik is an accomplished fine artist and documentary photographer, publishing multiple photo books.
