Car crashes shot in high-speed with @sinem_sakaoglu , @visual_distractions , and @pascalrossow with original music: when I started 3d printing these cars in 2022, I would give them to people to play with, and usually their first impulse was to crash them together, so I started designing new ones with pieces that would fly off during crashes. This year I’ve been working on a toy where the entire car-body separates into three mix-and-match pieces, but this video shows some early versions of the concept where only the accessories fly off. I started adding text to the cars after seeing a lot of Jenny Holzer in Europe while on tour with @vera.sola , always envisioning the cars as half-conscious bodies coming to terms with the tragedy of being wrought from the earth, then swept up in human motives to inflict violence on it. After seeing @bluepantheroficial earlier this year I thought a lot about the theatricality and portrayal of rivalry in lucha libre - and colorful, glittering exteriors masking the mutual urge to obliterate - and while making this edit I envisioned the cars as beloved lucha libre fighters. The cars are always finished with loads of @rothmetalflake metal flake to make them sparkle, and repurposed pinewood derby axles make the wheels roll. Wouldn’t have been able to do this without @vera.sola and @themilkcartonkids ; we shot this on a day off from Vera tour in Hamburg, and it was extraordinarily fun watching Sinem, Julian and Pascal work their animation and motion-control magic in the studio to bring the little cars to life.

I love animation - duh! But what makes me keep going back to stop motion is the process. The collaboration, the real time-ness (not really a word, i know) of it all, all the hands that touch and leave their prints on the final shot, the laser focus and the tunnel vision of obsessing over every detail. Stop motion feels to me like home 🏡 . Here is a glimpse of what went into making one single shot work...and if you're wondering why the foreground is moving ( #motioncontrol ), we decided the depth perception was not realistic when we moved the camera (background to sky & clouds had way too much #parallax ), so we did what we do best in animation: we cheated 🙃 Shot locked camera, moved the foreground and added a digital pan & voila! .
