for our project to be included in the global @archdigest WOW 2022 list is such an honour, a celebration for contemporary architecture in India. It is a tremendous validation for those of us who choose to invest energy and focus on detail and craft in our design projects.
This Site Museum - situated in an extraordinary World Heritage Site in New Delhi - will welcome millions of visitors, and introduce them to the remarkable history, the aesthetic and architectural legacy, of a great empire.

◾In Delhi, India, vir.mueller architects designed the Humayun’s Tomb Site Museum, a subterranean cultural institution that integrates heritage preservation, landscape, and community space by drawing on stepwell typologies to connect the historic site with the surrounding urban fabric.
"Visitors move through a sequence of courts, mature trees, and sandstone markers that act as follies in the landscape. This subterranean strategy was born out of a strict UNESCO mandate that no new structure rise more than one meter above the existing grade, ensuring uninterrupted views of the 13 monuments located across the Heritage Site."

Ultimately, the building is a bridge between the history of the tomb and the ecological future of the nursery. It honors the logic of Delhi’s stepwells and introverted havelis, where depth organizes both climate and experience. By unifying the natural and built environment, the Humayun’s Tomb Site Museum provides a vital vision for India’s built heritage and Delhi’s public realm. In the spirit of Gaston Bachelard, to move downward is to enter another temporality – a space for contemplation. This choreography of descent ensures that the museum, though structurally autonomous, remains an emotive connection to a place of collective heritage.

Such a pleasure to host aspiring Architects at the virmueller architects studio. Four students from The British School in New Delhi spent a week with us, to experience what it takes to design and build good buildings. Thank you Anhaita, Miraya, Prattusha and Siya for your curiosity and enthusiasm.

almost ready…the cogent office tower
Sometimes we see our design work best through the eyes of others….the gaze of so many people who inhabit and experience the joy of architecture. Thank you to the students of the Yamuna River Project studio at Tulane University for visiting and documenting our projects.

The Dappled Shadows cannot be caught
But when they leave and the sky greys and we
Kick the leaves and shuffle despondent through our autumn
We see they were but dappled shadows
When the kiss of the sun
Is shaded by the branches of a tree.
From the poem Dappled Shade by Penny Seymour Lee
