One of the dimensions of our creative practice is centered around a relationship with place, and includes processes of regeneration and sustainability. Prior to taking an international flight, I worked within my local community and in our
@gatewayschoolsantacruz learning garden to plant 12 diverse trees with children.
With the gift of time in Italy, and the inspiring invitation to create work within the soon to be blossoming home garden of Mikelle and Simone, we engaged in a cultural exchange. From the blessing of staying up late in connective conversation to taking many small trips to learn and connect more with the people and plants of this special region, we were inspired to share some of our foundational soil cultivation practices from here at home. Mikelle
@l.mikellestandbridge shared some wood scraps from a conservative restoration project she is engaged in at the Casa Regis studio space and Vince
@vinwaring worked with them to hand-build a vermicomposting vessel. This box is where we saved and placed the food scraps from our various special meals.
As part of our time we had a magical visit with Sissi
@sissi.castellano and Stefano
@panconesis who are masters in weaving and natural dye! In reciprocity for a generous visit to their garden, home studios, and workshop, we prepared a local, seasonal feast from the regional organic Farmer’s Market in town
@leteatbi !
I already believed in magic, but that feeling has only grown since learning about the remarkable
@michelangelo_pistoletto and his local studios, stunning museum, and school designed to center conversation, collaboration, and sustainability. I am in awe of Michaelangelou’s brilliant daughter, who organizes an organic farmer’s market in this city of art weekly.
The food grown by the local vendors, the vegetables, herbs, butter, yogurt and local meat were all featured in the Persian/Iranian feast we created to share our thanks with our various hosts and new friends. The scraps from our delicious breakfasts and shared feast are now the first layer in the vermicompost box, starting the decomposition process to help regenerate and create new life-giving soil, the place where gardens really begin.
