Back in 2008 I made it a New Year’s resolution to carry a 35mm camera everywhere I went and I haven’t stopped since. But before then I would occasionally shoot some film and here are some random 35mm snapshots I took in 2007.

Smell the Glove at St. Jerome’s on March 9th, 2010. All photos by @vintagedbb Smell the Glove was a hair metal, hard rock, & punk party that went down about once a month at St. Jerome’s. It was basically a sleazy Sunset Strip tribute party, which really wasn’t all that different from a regular night at Jerome’s. This was the debut edition of STG with DJ sets by Klicka (Wizardry), Ilan, and Cobra. Gogo dancing by Amber Star and Apathy. Conrad was slinging the sauce. It was also Ilan’s birthday celebration. I got here early for the “Power Hour” from 9-10pm, after grabbing some dumplings from that joint around the corner on Clinton — my go-to meal for SJ nights. This was a fun party and it had a good crowd of LES rockers, along with a few of the downtown dance party kids. It went very late, as in the gate came down and things kept going well past 4am. One thing I noted from this night didn’t even happen at the party. Andy Shaw stopped by for a while and scored a free Kill Shop Kill tote bag, which was one of the giveaways. He later told me that when he was riding home on his motorcycle, the bag burst into flames - which I guess is pretty metal. #NOPHOTOS Also, two days in a row with an “on this date” post. I’m getting lame.

October 2010 in some warehouse in Williamsburg that I think became a wedding venue, for some reason Pepsi sponsored a party that @roxycottontail and @gbh_events threw featuring @diplo @djdrama @malucamala & @eliescobarnyc . Not your standard corporate event, people got sweaty until they got kicked out sometime after 4am and I walked my ass home. More pics and a full write up over on Driven By Boredom.

New Years Eve 2008 was a glorious mess. I got far too drunk to take photos but thankfully the chaos of Rated X teaming up with Trash and Burning Angel made for some fun photos anyway. 130 photos and a full write up on Driven By Boredom plus 80 more NSFW photos over on Girls of DBB. As always, RIP DJ Jess. Been ten years and we still are thinking about you.

Another one gone. RIP David. And sorry my flash was so blinding. I know I have better photos of you but my hard drives are still packed from the move. Thanks for making Friday nights even more fun and photogenic.

Proof of life. Please enjoy these embarrassing low res photos of me I found in a folder titled “MySpace” while I am still recovering from my move. My office still isn’t set up yet but we are getting there…

It’s been too long but there’s a full throwback post up on Driven By Boredom. This time I re-edited and uploaded a random Tuesday night at Happy Ending from 2009. It got a bit wild so you might wanna go over to my website to see the rest. Hopefully I’ll state uploading stuff like this a bit more regularly after I move and my life calms down a bit this winter.

When the economy collapsed in 2008 I was laid off from my last “real job”. In that first year as a full time photographer I was only able to stay afloat because of two big jobs. One of those gigs was photographing the Sundance Film Festival for the festival’s main sponsor. That sponsor was a small absinthe company who only was able to sponsor the festival because other companies were slashing their marketing budgets, and I was only able to get the job because they couldn’t afford to pay a more established photographer. I had photographed a couple events at Sundance the year before, but I had no business shooting something like this. I didn’t even have a professional camera. I got to photograph some of the biggest celebrities on the planet but the photos are terrible. One of those celebrities was Robert Redford, the founder of Sundance and my mom’s favorite actor. I was too nervous to bother him enough to get a photo where he was actually looking at the camera, but I did get to tell him how much my mom loved him, which I am sure made him feel great. But that job meant so much to me and even though I never photographed Sundance again I will never forget it. I was able to keep paying my rent and even buy a proper professional camera a few months later. So RIP Robert Redford, you were one hell of an actor, but being able to photograph you was so much more important to me than your movies, even Sneakers which was the first PG-13 movie I ever saw in theaters.

Where were you on September 14th 2007? I walked around NYC before heading to Rififi for Trash and then I eventually wandered down to the LES for Ruff Club at the Annex. It was your typical Friday night for me back then so these photos aren’t particularly interesting but maybe that’s why they are interesting. Just another fun night downtown. I posted 120 photos from the night and a longer write up over on Driven By Boredom if you wanna check the whole gallery out. RIP Mikey.

July 4th 2007 the world was changed forever when Joey Chestnut took out Kobayashi to win his first Nathan’s Famous Coney Island Hot Dog Eating Contest and never looked back. He won his 17th title today eating 70.5 hot dogs in 10 minutes. Back in 2007 I booked The Gaskets, a band I was managing, to play before the contest, mostly so I could witness it first hand. I was shooting with a camera that was essentially a toy, but it’s a pretty great time capsule of the moment competitive eating truly became America’s pastime.

Heading to LA tomorrow for the first time in way too long to here’s some old LA 35mm. I got some photos in the Superchief Contagious Culture show Saturday night and it seemed like a good excuse to see some friends and shoot some photos. I get in late Friday and leave Monday evening so won’t have too much time but hit me up if you’re around or come by the show. It would great to reconnect with people I haven’t seen in ages.
