We are deeply honored that the Academy has recognized our absurdist, black-and-white, French-language film, TWO PEOPLE EXCHANGING SALIVA. Inspired by real-world events including the Woman, Life, Freedom movement in Iran, and the rise of the far right in the United States and abroad, we wanted to tell a female-led story that uses imagination to reflect this moment in which the line between the ridiculous and the horrific has collapsed. Made as an international collaboration shaped by the experience of exile, the film follows Malaise and Angine, two women whose tenderness toward one another shows how an act of love—even a single kiss—can become an act of resistance.
