In these times, I find it extremely difficult not to intertwine the political state of the United States with my own artistic expression. I would make an argument that all Black music grown from the African diaspora has protest at its core, surviving the exploitation, oppression, and evil they endured through that time. Music was a conduit for perseverance and resilience. My Indigenous ancestors shared this with the enslaved Africans who came over. Enslaved songs, Plena, Samba, Blues, Jazz, Salsa, Afrobeat, Soul, Reggae, Hip-Hop, Folk, and Punk all have resistance embedded in the DNA of the music. If you enjoy these genres and the musicians who make them, I urge you to not only explore the fruits of the music but the roots—where it came from, what culture developed it, and what it was resisting. I urge all musicians and artists to use their music as a way to express resistance in these times, as this is what our musical ancestors have done in generations before us.

💔 Rest in Power Ryan Porter
Gone too soon. His music was soulful and human. I only met him once, but his music and voice, both compositionally and on the trombone, was so genuine, it felt like we were good friends after years of listening and studying his sound.
I always felt akin to Ryan’s voice, and it reaffirmed my inspirations and direction on the trombone.
