Yesterday, I presented my senior research project on Camp & Comedy in Contemporary Latinx TV ๐บ
as a chicana screenwriter that has been working on her craft, itโs been a niche topic that has lived in my head for forever.
Camp in film and television has been a world Iโve always been drawn to and escaped to, but I have to admitโฆsometimes it feels a little too Euro-centric and as a woman of color that didnโt always sit right me. So I decided my project would be on Latina/oโs in camp and how we belong and are already taking up space in this world too!! the research process was fun, and grueling, and upsetting at times, but also extremely rewarding ๐ซ

I am (finally) graduating from college in 2 weeks and I have been thinking SO much about my dad and how my hard work and this journey has been inspired by his never ending aspirations and drive, but Iโve been equal parts excited and also sad that he wonโt be there in person to see me accept my diploma.
Two days ago, my Tia sent me this photo from my kindergarten graduation that I have NEVER seen before. (Those that know grief know that a new-old picture of your loved one youโve never seen is the GREATEST gift.)
I remember this day vividly, and I remember how proud my parents were of me. In a way, Iโm taking this as a big hug from my pops. I know if he was here heโd be over the moon and so Iโm grateful I can visually see this moment and his big, youthful smile while he holds his girls. Look at how pretty my parents are btw!
Iโve been so emotional lately, and with the recent passing of my great-grandma, our Nana, Iโve just been wrestling with grief in a different way.
Grateful and thankful and sad and itโs bittersweet and all the things in between. ๐๏ธ

She taught me how to be a glamour girl and still has voluminous hair till this day. One day, I was playing this song and she told me she loves the Wah-Watusi because it reminds her of all the girls in high school dancing to it on the front steps at school! Just picturing a group of Mexican girls with big hair and cute outfits dancing to this song in Juรกrez in the early 60โs makes my heart melttttt. These are the inter-generational stories Iโm taking with me ๐
