I had loads to do today - so obviously I thought the best use of my time would be to start creating a corn dolly feature wall!
Most of these designs were made as testers or samples - or have been taken to so many workshops and festivals that they are starting to disintegrate! I felt it was time that they had a space of their own to retire to.

This is a design I've never tried before, but I'm testing it out on request.
It's called a ✨ Lancashire Fringe ✨ and, traditionally, it's made with oats - but this version is made with barley because I had lots already soaked which needed using up! The barley worked perfectly well for practicing the technique though, and I'm pleased with how this corn dolly experiment turned out.
Looking forward to making one with oats next! 🌾

A few months ago Lucy asked me to make a series of tiny corn dollies which would be incorporated in to bag charms - and this is the wonderful result!

Lucy says: 'A sucker for a social trend (which I always think of as folklore in their own right), I wanted to make series of small works inspired by the 2020s obsession with bag charms. These ones feature hag stones, genuine morris bells from the Morris Federation, corn dollies by Vic Jay, an off-brand tamagotchi (comes with instructions!) and more!'

I used modern wheat to make a spiral plait corn dolly yesterday, as a little gift for a friend.
I've been experimenting with more contemporary varieties (heritage varieties are increasingly difficult to come by - especially at this time of year!), and am quite pleased with this type. It's not as joyful to use as some of the older sorts of wheat, such as Maris Widgeon, (and the end results aren't quite as polished) but I think it turned out fairly well, and I like that it was made using straw that was readily available and easy to get hold of.
I'm all about corn dolly making being inclusive and accessible and, as much as I love heritage wheat, I feel like struggling to source it can be a huge barrier to the craft, especially for those who are just getting started.
