My path to becoming an artist?
After 12 years of professional figure skating, 6 years of contemporary skating and 6 years of studying geosciences, I am now on my long and intensive journey to become an artist. Sometimes when people ask me what exactly I do, I find it hard to explain because it’s not so easy and simple to answer this question for them and also for myself. Who am I? My interests are wide-ranging, my experiences are varied and my artistic practice is still growing.
I am Vivien Reichel (she/her), but everyone calls me Vi now! I’m a performative and visual (science-)artist, choreographer and researcher currently based in the Netherlands. After completing my Bachelor of Science in Physical Geography at the University of Leipzig, where I specialized in Earth System Data Science, I began my studies in Moving Image at

@artezuniversityofthearts in Enschede 2024. My praxis fuses scientific fascination with artistic research, utilizing my background in contemporary ice dance and multimedia in an attempt to blur the boundaries between art and (geo)science.
Within my praxis I approach my artistic research through a transdisciplinary lens creating a personal entrance point. In my near future, I aim to delve into more personal topics, exploring my background, interests, and identity through my films. By addressing these themes, I seek to answer questions both for myself and for my audience, whether from a deeply personal perspective or through the stories of other characters and individuals portrayed.
In the end, it’s not about who I am to you, but who I am to me. Maybe I don’t fit into categories, but maybe that’s my way of exploring, understanding and creating. I’m not a scientist, I’m not a dancer, I’m not a figure skater, I’m not a filmmaker, but I am an artist.
