Many of us know the pain cancer can bring either directly or indirectly. It’s something that does not discriminate and has the ability to turn lives upside down in an instant. But even amidst such uncertainty and pain, often times small unexpected gifts begin to emerge. Things like community. Service. Stepping into the hard and sharing the load with someone else. This year @vertra will be riding in the 14th annual @tourdepier to remember and celebrate the life of one of our community members we lost this past year to a cancer diagnosis, Allyson Welch. Ally was deeply loved by many and so we show up for her, her family, and her loved ones because community can be medicine. We hope you can join us, May 17th at Manhattan Beach Pier.

N E L L Y x V E R T R A Dave “Nelly” Nelson, is an icon in the Action Sports media world. As a Santa Cruz, CA resident for the last 40yrs, Nelly went from being in front of the lens as a professional skater to behind it. Under the mentorship of NorCal legend @tonyrobertsphoto he began shooting his peers and friends for skate and surf mags as well as their sponsors. With his affinity for surfing, he naturally evolved into his role as a Senior Photographer for Transworld Surf Magazine, and earned multiple marketing contracts from industry staple brands like O’Neill and Vans. Citing additional inspiration and tutelage from legends @brianbielmann , Larry Moore (RIP) and @tsherms , Nelly has since gone on to garner over 100 surf magazine covershots internationally and just recently released his first book documenting his art and global travels. Nelly currently resides full time on the North Shore of Oahu; where if he’s not shooting, you can find him out surfing at his favorite spot, Rocky Point. M A H A L O K A I . . . We’d first like to send our heartfelt Aloha to Kai’s wife Kea, their beautiful children and the entire Bartlett ‘Ohana. Kai Bartlett was one of, if not, the greatest to ever do it. His endless list of competitive titles, records, paddling techniques and innovative, high performance watercraft will live on thanks to the perpetuity of social media and his @kaiwaacanoes brand. …But what was irreplaceably lost, and what we will miss most is his physical presence. We will miss Kai - the amazing Father, Husband, Son, Brother, Friend and source of inspiration to us all. We will miss his humor, his fight, his willingness to help others first, and especially the ever-present Aloha he radiated that made everyone around him feel welcomed and special. Kai, it’s impossible to summarize in a caption, how grateful we are to you and for all you’ve done for us over the years. So we won’t. Instead, we’ll look longingly to the day we can tell you… when we finally meet again. In the meantime, we hope you’re getting some well deserved rest before hopping back into the seat and continuing to paddle in paradise. Mahalo and a hui hou Kai. #kaiwaastrong
