In my coaching practice, synthesis-coach.com, I ask the following questions to get to the core of what motivates us:
What do you love?
What are you good at
What can you offer the world?
Continuing the conversation here by asking myself:
What am I good at?
During the height of the pandemic, while working at The NYT Magazine, I was entrusted by
@kathyryan to find a funeral home that would allow the extraordinary photojournalist
@philipmontgomery full access to photograph inside.
After days of cold calling funeral homes all across the city, something miraculous happened. Sal Farenga, of Farenga Bros Funeral Home in the Bronx, and I connected.
In those dark days of death and fear, Philip and I earned the trust of not only the Farenga brothers, who ran their family business with the utmost dignity, but that of a courageous family who allowed us to tell their story of grief, knowing we would do so with compassion and reality.
The editing process was brutal, but the purpose was unquestionable.
Navigating the imagery with care and sensitivity while not shirking from revealing the truth was an emotional and legal high-wire act.
I received the Picture Editor of the Year award for this story, which was gratifying, but not as gratifying as the work and its purpose.
What am I good at?
Finding the humanity in complex issues, engendering trust and pushing the narrative forward with intellect, truth and compassion.
What are you good at?
