We were supposed to be home Tuesday. Instead, we kept extending our stay and didn’t get home until Friday. A few days before our trip to Big Sur, we still had nowhere to stay. We figured we’d either find a first come first serve campsite or end up dispersed camping somewhere along the coast. Then three days before leaving, the only campground with availability popped up, so we booked it without thinking much about it. As our check in date got closer and rain stayed in the forecast, more campsites slowly started opening up. We decided to wait until we got there to choose our spot and somehow ended up tucked into what felt like the best campsite in the entire campground. The first night it rained through the redwoods and by the second morning, most people had packed up and left. There were only a few occupied campsites left in the whole canyon. The fog hung in the trees all day, everything smelled like damp earth and campfire smoke, and it felt like we had this tiny corner of Big Sur completely to ourselves. What was supposed to be a road trip with multiple campsites along the coast turned into us extending our stay again and again because neither of us wanted to leave. I still can’t decide if @ventanabigsur Campground was actually that magical or if we just got unbelievably lucky experiencing it almost entirely alone, but either way it completely ruined my standards for campground camping.

Definitely! ❤️
