Aidan performing SISU at @kmfaclassical for their Declaration Project Showcase. (Part 1) SISU is one of the Master’s Solos from Navaji’s original production KOMOREBI, originally created on @ventanaballet in 2023. This showcase featured performances by local artists and organizations inspired by the local community’s perspectives on America’s founding ideals: Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. As a multiethnic, Mexican-rooted choreographer whose work is guided by a reverence for life, a devotion to inner liberty, and a pursuit of happiness rooted in meaning, resilience, and spirit, I felt SISU was especially fitting. This solo speaks to inner resilience: the quiet force that rises when one must keep going, keep listening, keep becoming. It is about dignity under pressure, the refinement of will, and the choice to move forward without losing tenderness, presence, or soul. It happened folks— every dancer’s worst nightmare. I was 45 minutes from going on stage. I was at the end of an hour-long warm up. I went for a big jump, very standard, and I simply landed wrong. A slight miscalculation and I just crumpled to the floor. Thankfully, with all the Grace of the teachers in my life, I have trained my neural pathways to know that these are the moments to drop into an even more extreme calm— not panic. Everyone around me rushed to help (so kind and sweet!) But they all offered me the usual: ice and painkiller. My immediate response was a gentle “no, I’m not an ice person. No I don’t want to kill the pain yet, I need to know what’s happening in my body.” And I truly believe that made all the difference. I started ankle circles IMMEDIATELY. I didn’t even wait 10 minutes. Gentle, calm, soothing movements to keep the blood flowing, HELPING the body do what it needs: deliver the good stuff and transport the bad stuff. And I think the results speak for itself. 2 days later I’m walking without pain. I’m so blessed to have this awareness and so many amazing body professionals around me. We are so much more resilient and powerful than we believe. We just have to work WITH the body instead of against in.
