Vol.10 João and Adriana: We All Need Some Brazilian Spirit
In this episode, we talked to a lovely couple from Brazil João and Adriana. João is artist, Adriana is art strategist.
None of us are native English speakers, but this is the language we rely on to communicate with each other. In international settings like this, we often find ourselves defaulting to English. At one point, we started talking about cultural stereotypes through a simple example. In any field, being articulate is powerful. But there’s also something important in being patient with those who are less confident in a shared language. That patience opens up space for unexpected understanding, and for different ways of thinking to emerge. Talking with João made me realize that in the end, it’s the person speaking that matters most, not how fluent they are in a particular language.(Cai Xun)

I programmed a screening of Ho Bin’s short experimental films on February 14 from 7 pm.
Making films with little—or no—budget inevitably depends on friendship, and this screening grew out of that reality. We met by chance at a restaurant three years ago, where Ho Bin first shared his short film Life with me. Since then, I’ve followed his practice closely.
I later found myself connecting his work, my own perspective, and Unicorn Image through one word: rootless. It became clear this was where the screening should take place. Ho Bin and I were also both born in February, and perhaps because of this shared sense of rootlessness, I’ve come to believe that friendship is what sustains both making and living.
On February 14, let’s open Valentine’s Day to a different kind of intimacy—shaped by moving images, friendship, and shared imagination.
Since Ho Bin is currently attending an artist residency program in Saudi Arabia, he will join us online for a talk after the screening.
We warmly invite you to join us.
