The transformation of The Dome to new heights 🏗️
At Place de la Bourse in Brussels, near the vibrant Dansaert district and just steps from Sainte-Catherine and the Grand Place, structural works at The Dome are in full progress.
Behind the preserved historic façades, the new structure is steadily taking shape, carefully balancing between heritage and innovation. With the fifth floor recently underway, the scale and complexity of the project are becoming increasingly tangible.
With The Dome, we are transforming the historic “Les Grands Magasins de la Bourse” into a sustainable and pioneering redevelopment offering an attractive mix of retail (@delhaizebelgium ), hospitality (@eataly ), state-of-the-art office spaces and smart rental apartments.
Together with @cit_blaton and our partners, we continue to move forward with precision and dedication, shaping a new chapter for one of Brussels’ most iconic locations.

On the historic site of the princely de Merode family in Ixelles, adjacent to Tenbosch Park, the structural works for the underground parkings at de Mérode are in full swing beneath the new buildings. ⚜️
In the former city palace, the basement structural works and demolition have been successfully completed, and preparations are now underway for the roof construction.
A varied selection of apartments is still available, ranging from 60 to 327 m².

✨ The Grand onthult zijn imposante gevels ✨
Na het wegnemen van de gevelstellingen aan het Hendrikaplein begin dit jaar, was het onlangs de beurt aan de Albert I Laan gevel en het bovenste deel van de indrukwekkende Zeedijk gevel. Het resultaat is een prachtige harmonie van gerestaureerd erfgoed en een doordachte, hedendaagse optopping volgens het ontwerp van @davidchipperfieldarchitects .
Dankzij de nieuwe verdiepingen, de elegant vormgegeven dakkapellen, de gereconstrueerde koepels en de toren herstellen we de historische bakenfunctie in de omgeving en brengen we de grandeur van het monument volledig terug.

Op de toren van @thegrand.be in Nieuwpoort werd deze week een bijzonder gebogen raamelement geïnstalleerd: een indrukwekkend staaltje vakmanschap, gerealiseerd in samenwerking met @enjoyconcrete . Het raam weegt maar liefst 7.159 kg en meet 4,5 meter breed en 3,6 meter hoog.
Met behulp van een uniek 3D-model werd het beton in twee richtingen gebogen. Zowel de verticale boog als het horizontale vlak volgen nauwgezet de lijnen van de toren en sluiten perfect aan bij de architecturale vormen van het gebouw. Als onderdeel van de nieuwe toren, die wordt opgetrokken op basis van studies van de oorspronkelijke toren, vormt dit raamelement een subtiele knipoog naar de flamboyante kustarchitectuur uit de tijd van “Le Grand Hôtel”.

Step back in time to 1872, when the Belgian Thiéry family opened “Les Grands Magasins de la Bourse”, Belgium’s very first modern department store. What began as a refined destination for clothing and fabrics quickly evolved into a true temple of luxury, offering everything from gloves, shoes, and perfumes to furniture, carpets, toys, and even sports equipment. By the 1920s, nearly sixty departments welcomed visitors into a world of elegance and innovation. These newly uncovered photos offer a glimpse into the past, one that reveals the grandeur and ambition which continue to guide this exceptional transformation.

Tijdens het ontwerpproces van @thegrand.be speelde de maquette een belangrijke rol. Het team van @davidchipperfieldarchitects gebruikte de maquette o.a. om verhoudingen en detailleringen te testen en om de interactie tussen de gerestaureerde historische gevels en de nieuwe verdiepingen precies goed te krijgen. Het resultaat is een ontwerp waarin erfgoed en vernieuwing in perfecte balans samenkomen.

Een volgende indrukwekkende mijlpaal op de werf van @thegrand.be : de eerste van de vier gereconstrueerde koepels staat op zijn plek. ⚜️

Elke koepel wordt eerst in 3D ontworpen en vervolgens off-site vervaardigd in hout, met een hoogte van 5,75 m en een diameter van 3,9 m. De houten panelen worden op maat gevormd, gebogen en verlijmd in mallen, waardoor ze een perfect gelijkmatige kromming krijgen voordat ze op het dak worden geplaatst.

De koepels sierden ooit, samen met de iconische toren, het voormalige Le Grand Hôtel, totdat ze in 1941 door bombardementen op het Hendrikaplein werden vernietigd. Voor The Grand worden ze opnieuw opgebouwd, herontworpen door David Chipperfield Architects, als een hedendaagse, verfijnde interpretatie van het oorspronkelijke Belle Époque-silhouet.
