Saving your photos for web is super important! The size of your photos can make or break a website’s load time. In an ideal world, you want your file sizes to be as small as possible so they load without delay. In Photoshop, go to File > Export > Save for Web. Mac: Command + Option + Shift + S PC: Alt + Ctrl + Shirt + S In the top right of the window, you can adjust things like export quality and file type. When exporting for web, JPEG is generally best for smaller file sizes. PNG is only necessary when transparency is required. The bottom left of the window shows the size of the exported image and approximately how long it will take to load.

Accessibility is more important than ever. Let’s take a lok at a few ways you can ensure your website is accessible to everyone. 1) Contrast is one of the most easily overlooked elements in web design. Colorable is a great website for checking contrast or finding a set of colours to work with. / 2) The choice of typeface can have a big impact on the accessibility of your website. Sans-serif fonts are good choices for larger blocks of text because they are easy to read and have simple letterforms that are less likely to be confused with each other. Avoid decorative or script fonts that can be harder to read, especially in small sizes. 3) Simplicity is important when it comes to making your website accessible. A cluttered layout, flashy animations, or distracting backgrounds can make it harder for users to focus on the content. Use a simple, clean design with plenty of white space to help users navigate your website more easily. 4) Alt tags are a critical part of making your website accessible to visually-impaired users. Alt tags are read aloud by screen readers and should accurately describe the image to help users understand what it shows. For example, instead of using an alt tag that says "studio5a.jpg," use a descriptive alt tag like "a green room, lacking natural light." 5) Setting a minimum font size of 16px or larger ensures that text is readable for all users, including those with visual impairments. Small text can be difficult to read, especially for older users or those with visual impairments. By using a minimum font size, you can make sure that all users can easily read the text on your website. 6) Large images can be visually stunning, but they can also slow down the loading time of your website. To make sure that your website loads quickly and is accessible to all users, use large images sparingly. If you do use large images, make sure to reduce their file size and use responsive design to ensure they scale appropriately on smaller screens. This will help to ensure that your website is accessible to users on all devices, including those with slower internet connections.

Final Project for Ethics • Ok so do I fully understand coding after this project - no. But I’ll still call myself a coding girlie now. Probably my favourite project for this subject. This final studio project was a web portfolio of all the 4 projects we’ve been working on this semester. We had to also include 2 projects from our Politics of Image and Text class that we completed last semester. Phoenix was the system we used to code our websites, and can I say learning coding is like learning a new language. BUT this was SO fun, and a new skill was learnt which I’m definitely excited to see how I can take that further in my own career journey.

A smorgasbord of inspiring work and insights shared by @zeke.pdf and @t_houston_design in this morning’s Ethics of Image and Text lecture 🙌 Don’t ask for permission, ask for forgiveness. Go wide, push the boundaries of a project and find a way to make it your own (present what you want to do — remember, it’s your portfolio you’re building). Try extending on projects with reflection and space, and create a bank of visual material to continue to draw from. Untether your inspiration from an algorithm — inspiration happens in unexpected places (collect, collect, collect), and take this time to figure out out what you enjoy (and what you don’t) — it’s okay that it may take time to find your footing. 👏👏👏

‘Why Just Wear?’ is a visual essay in the form of a photo booklet examining fashion design & fashion photography through a lens of resistance. For decades, fashion has been used as a tool for self expression, constraint, desire, confidence, protest, and so much more, but how? My visual essay sought to engage in the evolving history of the relationship between fashion and the people who wear it. The main divisions of this project detail how fashion has been used as a tool to control the perception of the female body, how fashion has been used to challenge oppressive regimes and societal practices, how fashion photography has been used as a tool in the destigmatisation of sex, and how fashion changes to challenge what we expect. These photos, drawn from several museum, photographic and fashion archives, aim to create a transitional narrative of how fashion is an active tool of resistance, uncovering how deep rooted this history is, and how it has favoured particular narratives and voices. It was so powerful to engage with the works of these photographers to act against these regimes. Disclaimer: none of these images are my own. The interconnectedness of humans and nature. This is a project for my Critical Approaches to Visual Culture class. From a list of themes we had to curate together 40 images in a sort of order. If you know anything about me, you know im heading straight to the Nature theme choice! This photobook is a meditation on the relationship between humans and nature. Moving through chapters of touch, presence, ritual, embodiment, dissonance, and resolution, the project asks what it means to belong to the natural world and be a part of it. I especially wanted to question what it means to exist with nature in the modern world.

We’re so lucky to have had @charlescalvinmarlow , @t_houston_design and @cheylondevine.design come in today to talk about all things Viscom — sharing reflections on what they’ve learnt over recent years alongside a visual feast of inspiration from past projects. Take risks, make little experiments, be open to the unexpected, explore material affordances, travel, get to know printers, take on side quests, and find out what resources you have access to early on (think: maker space and photo labs!). Stay curious, stay passionate, and enjoy yourself along the way. 🙌 #designstudio #designstudent #designinspiration
