Wow !! I am so happy and proud to present this reel to promote cloth bags just before Kadalekayi Parishe - Ground nut fair in Basavanagudi, Bengaluru. We have lot of youngster who want to adopt the path of “Refuse” “Reduce” “Reuse” and eventually “Recycle” and not send very little to landfill or nothing to landfill.
Video recording: The very talented Siddu @waste.siddu@sahanakanthi@kutty_3333 a team work
Editing: @sahanakanthi@rohith_manjunath@sonesh_shet
Artists: @sahanakanthi@kutty_3333 and the ever green 1991 Bajaj Chethak from Seethu and Sarvothama sir
Please carry a cloth bag always, it is always possible when we put our heart and mind, choose reuse, reduce and recycle.
We often face the challenge of Green sponge used in wedding decorations especially for exotic flower arrangement. It can hold moisture and easy to pin the flowers stems for a beautiful arrangement. But this sponge cannot be recycled and also while removing the flowers, the sponge easily breaks into smaller pieces / almost powder resulting in microplastic.
Is there an alternative ? May not be. But if we use local flowers like marigold, chrysanthemum, they stay for 2 to 3 days. Please avoid the green sponge.
What are the tips and tricks to achieve a successful zero or low waste wedding ?
1. Pre-wedding planning !!!, yes, along with Pre-wedding shooting
2. We love our drums and sacks
3. Find destinations for waste streams, mainly kitchen waste including flower decorations, excess food and dry waste like paper plastic metal glass
4. Connect with Cleaning Staff, both at wedding hall as well as the caterer. Speak to them, explain them, they will listen and make it happen.
5. Find a "LOCAL" caterer with steel cutlery, eco friendly decorator. Multiple and deep discussions required.
6. Train the cleaning staff. Managed dust bins are the only way to achieve this.
7. Delegate and designate like minded friends and relatives. I am sure there will be one in the circle.
8. The final goal is "Diverting waste going to the landfill"
9. Segregation, collection and transportation is the mantra
10. Don't give up. Most will drink water in steel tumblers. A few will get their own bottle.

Enjoy the wedding or the green event.

A simple solution to the pressing waste crisis, getting worse each year: if every home begins composting, what a huge impact that can have on city waste volumes and climate change.
Read more in this throwback Bangalore Mirror article of 17th May 2025 by Y Maheshwara Reddy. Even more relevant a year later with SWM under sharp focus for its role in climate change, the article features views of experts Vani Murthy @wormrani , Vasuki Iyengar @vasuki.composting and Odette Katrak @odettekatrak on how composting can be a game-changer.
It demonstrates that ordinary people who are not experts can make extraordinary compost, that too in limited space!
Composting is quite simple, not as difficult as many believe. "It is easy to do and will reduce the burden on landfills" - Vani Murthy
Composting does not need space. "If you have space in your mind and heart, you will find space to compost" - Vasuki Iyengar
Composting can be done by busy people too! "It is magical, relaxing but most of all a simple action we can take from our homes to fight climate change"- Odette Katrak
Follow the pages in this collab post to know more about how you can compost.
As part of our #SpreadCompostingFever campaign, you'll find much related content over the past month, quotes by composting stalwarts and a reel by ordinary people making extraordinary compost that we hope will inspire you to try it too.

one knot at a time
bandhani is basically patience turning into a pattern.
This piece was tied using green gram and dyed with marigold flowers
the best part is untying it and seeing what the fabric was quietly holding all along
if your space would like to host a hands-on natural dye / bandhani workshop, feel free to reach out

How to maintain a citizen group active and motivated ?
A few tips from HSR Citizen forum !!
1. Engage them in activities and make it fun
2. Conversations around successful ideation and future activities
3. Connecting all age groups, knowledge sharing, encouraging new ideas
4. Creating an ecosystem to work together at this wonderful place called Swachagraha Kalika Kendra @swachagrahakalikakendra , a solid waste management learning center located in HSR Layout, Bengaluru.
And the story didn’t end with the workshop. 🌿
After conducting the natural dye session, we made sure that the remaining onion peels were composted with care, and the leftover dye water was diluted and lovingly returned to the plants. 🧅✨🌱
Because for us, sustainability is not just about creating something beautiful…
it is also about taking responsibility for what remains after.
From waste, to colour, to soil — every step matters.

Putting non-recyclable plastic covers into plastic bottles is not a good practice because it only hides the plastic waste instead of solving the problem. The plastic can still harm the environment in the future. Reducing plastic use and proper recycling are better solutions. #balajitheasura #climateaction #sustainableliving
