This collection of tigress artwork is so personal to my inner child 🐅 And @bombaymami has dropped thee inner child mantra with this song❣️ When the idea of the Sheerkhan tigress paintings came to me, I struggled with the feeling of the tigers not looking professional enough or looking childish... But when I had the idea to do a riff on the tiger stripes as henna designs I was soooo inspired ✨ The critical voices of "its going to look stupid" were overtaken by the immense joy and confidence of "they're going to look cool!" The artwork was pouring out of me, and the colors were so gorgeous and rich, they look like nothing I've ever seen before and I adore them for that 🎨 Growing up as a little Black and Trini girl in Midwest US, I didn't see a ton of comprehensive representation. My elders struggled with Black and Caribbean pride, and the Indo diaspora through the Caribbean was only taught to me in my household--never outside the home. It was like we had a history, culture, and existence that literally didn't exist outside our family. I didn't meet other Trinidadians until I left for college in Washington, DC. That little kid inside me who watched Bollywood movies on DVDs in Ferguson, MO, learned to cook curry goat, hated eating four day old pelau, only heard urdu from my complicated Dardhi Jaan, and learned most Muslim prayers from blessing food and praying at funerals... How could I tell her that her drawings were stupid? Even if they are childlike--that's actually real freedom for the little girl who had to grow up too fast. She was fearless and dreamed of great adventures, and taking her to the Galapagos Islands to study sea turtles was such an emotional and spiritual experience. Ooooweeeee the ways the light caught the layers of paint in "Bangle Tiger" just did something to meeeeee 🤩🐅🐯 I painted deep purple, gold, copper, black, and charcoal henna designed stripes as the tiger's orange fur. The tigress arm is stacked with gold and blue jewelry: bracelets, bangles, and chains with ornate shining blue jewels popping against the orange fur. The tigress paw's long black manicured talonous claws have a thin white lit cigarette smoking perched between two fingers. She's such a beautyyyyyyy 🐯 I hate that the limitations of print copy mean that I can't get this incredible color dimension on my greeting cards... Only the original painting will show all this gorgeous (and laborious) painting 🎨 But the copies are still beautiful! Elizabeth Taylor + Dracula = #vanrahstyledit 🤭🧛‍♂️💎🩸 I recently read Elizabeth Taylor’s autobiography and am currently perusing her coffee table book “My Love Affair with Jewelry,” and baybeeee she inspired the MAIN character of all my Budapest outfits to be thee jewelry! Being in Eastern Europe, I also wanted to channel some gothic vampire vibes. This gorgeous Grace Chuang taffeta and burgundy velvet jacket with the vibrant blood colored interior was such a rich looking piece that married the Liz Taylor and vampire vibes. Jacket from @poshmark Colorful jeweled cross earrings by @shopakira and the garnet and pearl drop earrings are from when I was invited to the White House back in 2022. They are replicas of Nancy Reagan’s earrings, and since Reaganomics was ACTUAL vampirism, I loved the poetry of wearing them with this look.
