This #EarthWeek, we're asking a bigger question: Are we measuring carbon the right way?
Operational carbon is critical—but it’s only half the story. At Vanderweil, we optimize 𝐓𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧: operational 𝐩𝐥𝐮𝐬 embodied carbon. True zero carbon is about how buildings operate and how they’re built. 🌱
Solar PV can cut operational emissions but can increase embodied carbon. Is it worth it? 𝐘𝐞𝐬—𝐢𝐟 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐥𝐲.
With @lemessurier_ we found the following carbon paybacks:
🅿️ Parking canopies: ~5 years
☀️ Rooftop PV: ~4‑years
✅ Best practices can cut this to ~2 years
How? Passive load reduction, using existing structures, and low‑embodied‑carbon materials.

This week we’re celebrating #EarthWeek 🌎
At Vanderweil, sustainability isn’t just a goal—it’s part of how we work every day:
♻️ One of the first engineering firm signatories of both the AIA 2030 and
MEP 2040 Commitments — pledging net zero operational carbon by 2030 and zero total carbon by 2040

🌍 Kicking off #EarthWeek early, sharing our work on the @scenichudson Center for Environmental Protection & Regeneration — a fossil fuel-free, net zero energy headquarters built from five repurposed historic structures in Poughkeepsie, NY. Vanderweil provided MEP/FP engineering for the office and public gathering space, which achieved ultra-low embodied carbon and net-positive operational carbon.
