I am so proud, and SO LATE, in announcing that our short film, FLAMINGO, made it into the Pasadena International Film Festival this weekend. A film born from the fears of the upcoming birth of my second child, FLAMINGO, is about daughterhood, motherhood, and what comes in between. We are scheduled for block #24 along with a few other shorts, tomorrow night (4/13) at 7:55 PM. The screening is at the Laemmle NoHo 7 in North Hollywood (5240 Lankershim). I’m very pleased with the way this turned out. My good friend June Arthur wrote this to perform in our acting class @bgbstudio one night, and I said, “Let’s shoot this bad boy!” I saw an opportunity to play around with a documentary shooting style. And then somehow we convinced Cate Cohen to come play with us. Because this was a rented location, we had to shoot fast. We loaded in, set up, shot, and loaded out in four hours. So we did spend a little bit of money on this one — on the location and some equipment. But we were also very fortunate to have help from some of my extremely talented friends, especially Liz Ehlers who shot this on her Red camera and colored the final footage and Clark Rhee who mixed the sound, and composed an original score (!!). I edited it myself. I got some advice from knowledgeable friends, but I hit all the buttons. If you can watch it on a computer instead of your phone, that would be amazing. In 2014 I was in a production of A Day in the Death of Joe Egg (one of my all time faves) @stage_left_theatre_chicago with a bunch of great folks. We were very lucky to find an 11 year-old @pjsorbet to play the challenging role of my daughter. Now she’s 23 and I just got to watch her kill it as Juliet @milwrep ! Congrats, Pipes! This was really fun to make! @cateeco at @bgbstudio had us pair up and write scenes in class one night and this is what @bhaleofficial and I came up with. We wanted to make something that felt like a cross between Gilmore Girls and Modern Family. It got a nice response, so we decided to shoot it! This is another zero budget, tiny crew project. @chrisraddish did double duty as Director and DP. I did the first couple of cuts, and then I had a session with Chris, where I learned a fuck ton about editing. If you ever get the opportunity to watch that guy do his thing, I highly recommend it.
