I cannot recommend this album enough. Jazz vibraphonist Walt Dickerson with a quartet featuring Andrew Hill, George Tucker, and a young Andrew Cyrille. (If you only know Cyrille from his free jazz exploits, do take a listen here. Masterful, minimalist playing).
This music has SPACE. It’s a “night record” for me and I think it is one of Rudy’s finest recordings.

For some reason, September 19th was one of the busier days at Van Gelder Studio over the decades, with at least 16 sessions being recorded on that date. Let’s start with a personal favorite, and the Don Cherry record I find myself pulling off the shelf most often. Many of the musicians on this LP (swipe for the lineup) had been touring and playing together a great deal and it’s evident when you listen. They are LOCKED IN. 🌪
I had the honor of interviewing Karl Berger, (who played vibes and piano here) for this project last December and it was truly illuminating. We talked about the recording of this album, Rudy’s microphone placement over his vibraphone (when he asked Rudy why he was placing the mic that way, Rudy just stared at him and then walked away 😆) and so much more.
Mr. Berger was actually one of the people that rushed Eric Dolphy to the hospital in Germany the night he tragically died. Again, I feel so lucky that I was able to hear these stories and memories from someone like Mr. Berger.
