The film will speak for itself … and that being said, Ms. Krall and I have a way of looking at music in some similar ways. I am being bold in speaking for her by writing my observations to-date.
1) It is hard work to give love via music … as it should be.
2) Music is healing … and we wish to be the way that it radiates out into the world at every opportunity.
3) To be able to give space to fellow musicians on the bandstand and to communicate while being wholly present via visual connection as the music unfolds, is a true blessing, and an honor to be granted the chance to do so.
4) Life is fun when you include friends.

For today’s #ThrowbackThursday I invite you to May of 1976, when I recorded my album “Yellow & Green” at Van Gelder Studio.
Since my previous CTI albums up to that point had included the word “blue” in the titles—Blues Farm, All Blues, Spanish Blue—I thought I’d add two more colors to the mix: Yellow & Green. I used acoustic, electric and piccolo bass on this album, so you may find even more colors yet when you listen.
I was joined by Kenny Barron and Ben Riley of my then regular quartet, along with Billy Cobham, Don Grolnick, Hugh McCracken, and Dom Um Romão.

Happy Mother’s Day, everyone… Today I honor my mother, Willie O. Carter. I feel her presence every day.
She was born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1910, and met my father Lutheran when they were both highschool students in Terre Haute, Indiana. After they graduated, they married and moved to Ferndale, Michigan, where she and my father would gracefully raise 8 children (of which Yours Truly was the 5th).
Both of my parents appreciated music. However, it was my mother who first pushed me to take up an instrument. I was 10 years old, and my school had just received a grant to start a music program. My mother was involved in the PTA, and when she heard that there was a truckload of instruments being delivered to the school, she told all of us kids to go pick one out. I came home with an aluminum cello, and quickly learned that music would define my path in life.
I began taking lessons at school, but before long, the teacher called my mother and told her that I’d outgrown what she could teach. My mother went out of her way to find me more lessons outside what the school could provide, and for that I am grateful.
This photo of the two of us is from 2006. She was 96 years old at the time, so I still have some catching up to do 😉
In her honor, I recently collaborated with Ricky Dillard on an album highlighting the hymns my mother loved so much. The album is called Sweet, Sweet Spirit, and you can find it on or any of your favorite streaming platforms.

My #dedicationtoeducation is among the most important parts of my legacy, and I am proud of the teaching materials I have created to guide bassists of all levels along their musical journeys.
If books are what you’re looking for, I invite you to peruse to see my ever-growing Ron Carter Library– the collection of my written works from teaching books to treatises and scores. I recommend “Comprehensive Bass Method” as the place to start (my students know it as “THE book”).
If you prefer to learn via a more dynamic format, however, I have another option to share: my online digital masterclasses with Open Studio and tonebase Double Bass.
Via these pre-recorded courses, you can access hours of video content from Yours Truly, in addition to some supplementary materials such as guided practice sessions and PDF downloads.
My longest course, “Blueprint for Jazz Bass,” is available on OpenStudio here: /courses/blueprint-for-jazz-bass/
If you’re looking for something more compact, I have three one-hour lessons on toneBase: “Fundamentals of Jazz Bass,” “Non-Chord Tones in Jazz,” and “Building a Jazz Bassline.” Find them via the “Lessons” drop-down menu on
I believe bassists of all levels can benefit from each of my courses. If you wish to bring your bass playing to a new level, take a look if you feel so inclined. Annnnddd spread the word of gift a book to an aspiring musician today. Support music #PlayedByHumans

For today’s #FlashbackFriday I am recalling May of a couple of years ago, when I had the joy of playing a duo at MoMA The Museum of Modern Art with my dear friend Russell Malone, who left the concert far too soon. It is a memory I cherish, and I am grateful to have this photograph.
