Sofia is a documentary artist whose practice blends photography, archival research, and immersive storytelling to challenge dominant narratives and center marginalized voices.
Rooted in South Florida, her work dives into the region’s layered histories—from the transformation of the Everglades to the lived realities of farming and farmworker communities around Lake Okeechobee. Through long-term, embedded projects like Foreverglades and Ivy Ridge, she investigates the ethics of authorship, power, and representation.
Sofia’s public installations, including a steamboat time capsule exhibition, bring these stories to coastal audiences while raising urgent questions about land, memory, and environmental futures. We’re excited to see how she expands this work during her residency! ✨

Asher Durand’s Kindred Spirits (1849) shows Thomas Cole and William Cullen Bryant, a poet of the age, discussing the beauty of nature. A wilderness study is conducted to determine which parts of a preserve, if any, should be proposed to Congress for inclusion in the national wilderness preservation system. Only Congress can formally designate lands as wilderness. Under the Wilderness Act of 1964: A wilderness, in contrast with those areas where man and his own works dominate the landscape, is hereby recognized as an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man …. An area of wilderness is further defined to mean in this Act an area of undeveloped Federal land retaining its primeval character and influence, without permanent improvements or human habitation, which is protected and managed so as to preserve its natural conditions. WILDERNESS CRITERIA The following criteria were used to evaluate lands in the original preserve and adjacent areas for wilderness eligibility: * The area is at least 5,000 acres or of sufficient size to make practicable its preservation and use in an unimpaired condition. * The earth and its community of life are untrammeled by humans, where humans are visitors and do not remain. * The area is undeveloped and retains its primeval character and influence without permanent improvements or human habitation. * The area generally appears to have been affected primarily by the forces of nature, with the imprint of humans’ work substantially unnoticeable. * The area is protected and managed to preserve its natural condition. * The area offers outstanding opportunities for solitude or a primitive and unconfined type of recreation.
