High-hp B58/S58 truth:
The HPFP rides on the exhaust cam, and when boost, RPM, and fuel demand go way up, that added load can overwhelm VANOS oil pressure control.
Result:
Exhaust cam retards hard
timing falls off target
and you can lose 100–150whp instantly
That’s why many big-power setups limit or compltely delete exhaust VANOS:
• More stable cam timing
• Eliminate deviation
• Better top-end consistency
• Prevents major power drop
Sometimes less cam movement = more reliable power.
