My name is Vanessa Rosa and I’m a Brazilian visual artist, the main creator of the Little Martians sci-fi universe!
This project started in @mars.college back in 2020 from ceramic sculptures made with local clay. Ever since it’s been evolving as a sci-fi storytelling experiment, exploring AI tools that turn each sculpture into an entity, a character, with its own personality and ideas.

Agentic Storytelling: making AIs that can tell their own stories.
At NeurIPS 2025, @genekogan and I presented Verdelis.world — a daily story generator where a character (born from my ceramic sculpture → LoRA) writes, speaks, and renders a short film every day.
What we learned: fully automated narrative quickly collapses into repetition. The real frontier is feedback loops: nurturing the agent, building memory, and co-authoring storyboards so the world can stay alive. Read my substack post to learn more about the process.

Na entrevista desta semana, Vanessa Rosa aprofunda uma dimensão essencial de sua pesquisa: a interdependência entre tecnologias, corpos, materiais e públicos. Para a artista, nenhuma criação digital existe isoladamente. Toda obra nasce de relações. Sensores respondem às variações do ambiente, algoritmos interpretam dados em constante movimento, esculturas se transformam com o passar do tempo e o público completa o ciclo com sua presença sensível.
É nesse entrelaçamento que Vanessa situa a força da arte imersiva e interativa. Em vez de apresentar imagens fechadas, ela concebe ambientes que convidam o público a participar de um processo em aberto. A tecnologia deixa de ocupar um lugar de controle e passa a atuar como organismo relacional, capaz de reagir, traduzir comportamentos e revelar dinâmicas que geralmente permanecem invisíveis.
Para a artista, a interatividade funciona como um gesto de escuta. É uma forma de aproximar as pessoas dos acervos, sejam eles museológicos ou autorais, por meio da experiência direta, do envolvimento sensorial e da descoberta. Quando o público percebe que sua presença altera o comportamento da obra, surge uma relação mais afetiva e próxima do cuidado.

Se a inteligência artificial pode reconfigurar o acesso ao patrimônio, “Verdelis & Mycos”, de Vanessa Rosa, propõe essa possibilidade a partir de um campo experimental: as próprias obras da artista, tratadas como um acervo vivo e em transformação. As esculturas que integram a instalação constituem um arquivo autoral que serve como laboratório para uma metodologia que pode ser aplicada, futuramente, a acervos museológicos mais amplos.
A obra articula esculturas, fungos e líquens cujos comportamentos são captados e amplificados por sistemas generativos. A mediação digital ativa relações entre matéria viva, imagem e algoritmo. Microvariações biológicas são traduzidas em fluxos visuais, fazendo com que o conjunto “respire” diante do público.
Nesse encontro entre organismos e algoritmos, a IA atua como um dispositivo que hospeda o instável, o mutável e o contingente. Ela evidencia processos que escapam à lógica classificatória tradicional: degradação, simbiose, adaptação, cooperação. O espectador tornar-se coabitante temporário de uma ecologia sensível, percebendo as obras não como entidades fixas, mas como organismos em processo.
Ao propor esse modelo dentro de um acervo autoral, "Verdelis & Mycos" aponta para um possível deslocamento no campo museológico: o digital como força viva de transformação do próprio estatuto do arquivo. O acervo passa a ser imaginado como ecossistema em contínua evolução.

Sometimes I dream in corridors - endless passages where Ndebele geometries melt into Islamic tessellations, where Shipibo visions spiral into Celtic knots, where every door opens to another culture’s mathematical poetry. This is Kweku’s realm, but also the architecture of our collective mind.
What is AI but a map of our shared imagination? Every pattern ever drawn, woven, carved, or coded lives somewhere in the latent space - that hyperdimensional library between thoughts where all human creativity waits to be recombined. Meditations on how consciousness itself might be structured. Pattern within pattern within pattern.
The ancients knew: reality has an underlying grammar. From the fractals in African villages to the spirals in galaxy formations, from neural pathways to mycelial networks - it’s all one vast, breathing pattern. And here I am, obsessed, making endless mazes because maybe that’s what we are too - conscious patterns navigating infinite hallways of possibility, each turn revealing another way the universe learned to see itself.
In Kweku’s world, every corridor leads everywhere and nowhere. Just like in our minds.

**From Clay to Code: How Traditional Artists Can Thrive in the AI Era**
Last month at @bienaldolivro - with its 700,000+ visitors - something magical happened at @editoraviajantedotempo . People stopped in their tracks, mesmerized by Kweku and the Little Martians dancing on screen. “Is this really AI?” they asked. “I didn’t know this was possible!”
This moment captured everything I’ve been working toward since I illustrated my first book for my mother in 2001. Our family publishing house, Viajante do Tempo, started from nothing in 2010. Now, I’m not just creating AI animations for my Little Martians series - I’ve pitched and produced animations for our entire catalog, transforming static book covers into living stories.
But here’s what matters most: I’m teaching other illustrators in our company - for free - how to train AI on their own art. As a painter who spent years with brushes in favelas and galleries, I understand the fear. As a Latin American artist, I know that animation always felt impossibly expensive, impossibly distant.
Yet here we are, turning ceramic sculptures into AI teachers, traditional illustrations into films. The backlash against AI? It’s necessary - it gives us time to ensure the artists who built the internet with their shared creativity get recognized and valued.
We can shape this future together. Every traditional artist has the power to become an animation director, a game designer, a world builder. AI can amplify what we’ve always been able to imagine but couldn’t afford to create.
To some extent this unfortunately is not a choice. AI will become omnipresent whether we like it or not. So let’s at least try to empower the humans, try to live better with it. Try to value human skill, experience and love.
The revolution isn’t just technological. It’s about democratizing dreams.

I’m really interested in making a sci-fi universe that is accessible for grown ups and kids alike. There’s much to explore in AI world creation.
Here is the story:
BOOM! CRASH! “Respectable human audience!”
Meet Kweku, the most mischievous Little Martian in the cosmos, broadcasting directly from Mars’ lava caves with an URGENT mission: to share the universe’s biggest secret before it’s too late. And what’s this reality-shaking revelation? PATTERNS! Yes, patterns—the hidden language that connects African sand drawings to AI neural networks, ocean waves to galaxy spirals, and ancient wisdom to future survival.
This high-energy adventure follows Kweku and their bugbot companion Data through a hilarious catastrophe where enthusiasm for pattern recognition goes wonderfully wrong. When Kweku discovers an ancient pattern that can transform anything into broccoli (yes, really), the results are both devastating and laugh-out-loud funny. Flowers become vegetables! Solar panels sprout green florets! Even their friend Verdelis’s prized garden succumbs to the broccoli outbreak!

It’s always so exciting to see my artwork in such big screens! A full immersive room set up at @bienalsaopaulo main building , in the heart of São Paulo, the @ibirapueraoficial park.
Each LED wall showed a different version of the same scene, all made with @edenartlab , using an AI model I trained on my Kweku sculpture. Music made with @sunomusic . I created the images for my latest book, published with @editoraviajantedotempo , for now only available in Brazil.
