Alberto Grifi: Corpo Collettivo retraces the work of one of the leading figures of Italian underground cinema. Moving through his films in a montage of images, the volume interweaves critical contributions, testimonies, and documents. Together, they reveal the complexity of a filmmaker who has always worked in an organic, affective, and political dialogue with others. Alberto Grifi: Corpo Collettivo chronologically traces the filmic trajectory of the Roman director, widely regarded as one of the leading figures of Italian underground cinema. His work is marked by a strong political commitment, as well as a sustained interest in the expressive potential of technological media, where he developed new cinematic devices and tools. Raised in the family workshop founded by his father, after initially devoting himself to painting and photography, he turned to cinema, engaging with experimental artists and figures such as Gianfranco Baruchello, Giordano Falzoni, and Aldo Braibanti. He gradually developed his research into a critical perspective against institutional repression. Conceived as a visual montage in which the films unfold alongside the reader, the volume is a homage to the organic nature of Grifi’s work. In traversing the films and scenes of his entire artistic production, it is possible to “revisit” and encounter fragments of previously made films, newly contextualised or completely transformed, leaving to memory the strength and ability to narrate them once again. Within this iconographic fabric are interwoven critical essays, first-hand accounts from interviews conducted during the research, and archival materials. The book highlights how, for Grifi, cinema was never an individual gesture, but a shared process, a space of relations. His work thus takes shape as a collective body, built through an ongoing dialogue with other artists, intellectuals, marginal subjects, and temporary communities. Edited by: Lisa Andreani, Valerio Di Lucente Heartfelt thanks to: Flavia Angelini, Alessandro Forte, Ivan Grifi, Interact, Miriam Sannino, Stefania Scarpini, Carla Subrizi The publication is realised in collaboration with Associazione di Promozione Sociale Alberto Grifi. The entire project was made possible thanks to the funding of Regione Lazio, under the public notice “Lazio Contemporaneo 2022”.

Happy to announce that ‘Bands’ by @david_blamey is now available through our distributor partner @artdata_london (UK & beyond) and @ideabooksnl (EU). * * * Bands is the latest incarnation of a long-term project in which Blamey has collected thousands of used rubber bands with a view to better understanding how their performative application in routine situations can lead to an extraordinary array of physical expressions. In previous iterations he has projected these bands at a monumental scale and arranged them systematically in a vitrine. But here, nearly a hundred photographs are distributed across the pages of a large-scale book that resembles a half-empty travel guide. It is both astonishing that someone would undertake such a task and exhilarating to see the numerous ways in which a humble circle of elastic can warp, kink, torque, tangle, coil and knot in the process of being removed from its intended place of use. These spent loops are instinctively discardable – the lowest of the low – and yet, solicitously documented and arranged according to some mysterious scheme, they are elevated to a value equivalent to that of music or sculpture – or, at least, to something eminently worthwhile. * * * Editing/Design by @valeriodilucente Published by @v.e.ii Printed by @tiburtini_ Details: Screenprinted recycled PVC softcover Multiple paper stocks Type: Focal by @greggazdowicz @commercialtype 240 x 275 mm 124pp

Yes, yes. Micro-dot gloves on. Bands is now in the Tate Archive & Library collection of artists’ books. Their definition of the form is ‘a book conceived by an artist as part of their practice, of produced in a multiple edition for wide dissemination’. This guideline is a useful parameter, but it doesn’t leave a lot of room for acknowledgment of the work done by editors, designers and printers. In the case of this book my publisher and the printer were silent partners. For example, at one point we reached an impasse with the choice of a tracing paper insert. My argument was that the material was too cold and a bit obvious. My editor, Valerio Di Lucente interpreted my concern musically instead of sculpturally - his expertise lying more in the rhythm of the linear reading experience than my obsession with materiality. So, we dropped the deadline while he went and found the last manufacturer of papers for wrapping salami slices in, the properties of which met both of our exacting standards. This recollection is just one of many new experiences I had during the making of this book. As a solo enterprise this publication wouldn’t have been the same. Thanks to Valerio at Veii and Tiburtini printers in Rome and to Gustavo at Tate Britain.
