CHRISTOPHER WILLIAMS
BOOKS 1989–2025 VIDEO SCREENING
20.04.2026 H18.00 While you can find us at Paris Internationale, COMMERCE continues its regular activity and programming at our bookstore in Via Tadino 30. Christopher Williams Title: Supplement 04 Ringier Jahresbericht 2003 Year: 2004 Format: book, silkscreened poster, offset card, DVD Paper: Gmund Colors 19, light brown matt, 100 g/m², wood-free / chlorine-free Producer: Ringier AG, Unternehmenskommunikation, Zürich Film duration: 332 min 17 sec Code: B-CWILLIAMS-.20-0002 On the occasion of Christopher Williams Books 1989–2025, Commerce presents a screening of Supplement 04 Ringier Jahresbericht 2003 (2004), a video included in the publication of the same title by Christopher Williams currently on view in the exhibition. Based on the structure of a television cooking program, the film alters its production rhythm by extending twelve shots so that they coincide with the actual time needed to prepare the food, expanding the overall duration from 50 to 332 minutes. The screening reactivates one of the materials on display and makes clear how, in Williams’s work, the book is an integral part of the artwork, a site in which the dispositifs of production and the circulation of images are made visible.

CHRISTOPHER WILLIAMS BOOKS 1989-2025 26.03.26 H18.30 Curated by Massimo Spada The project explores a fundamental aspect of Christopher Williams’s practice, in which the book functions not as documentation but as an autonomous space for the construction of the image. Catalogues, artist’s books, invitations, posters, and other printed materials trace his investigation into photographic devices, systems of reproduction, and modes of circulation. Sequence, layout, typography, pauses, and blank pages shape the meaning of the images rather than merely accompanying them. The exhibition highlights how the book form becomes central to his inquiry: a place where photography moves beyond the single print to operate as apparatus, montage, and critical structure. Thanks to Atelier Impopulaire for his support

EXHIBITION GENERAL IDEA 03.03.2026 H18.30 COMMERCE presents General Idea. A selection of FILE Megazines and other editions curated by Veronica Recchia and Vittorio Dapelo in collaboration with Locus Solus Archive Genova and a contribution by MASSIMODECARLO. General Idea was founded in Toronto in 1969 by AA Bronson, Felix Partz and Jorge Zontal. Harnessing humour and parody, General Idea borrowed structures from mass media, such as television, advertising, and magazines, to probe the production, circulation and consumption of images, art and culture. In 1972 they launched the first issue of FILE Megazine, an obvious spoof of the popular American news magazine LIFE. The exhibition presents a selection of the Megazine’s early issues, as well as the most experimental and avant-garde ones, and a collection of artist’s editions including books, multiples, and objects of various kind. A special thanks to Matilde Burelli.
