Ed Schad Lecture  Thursday, April 23, 12-1-1:30pm Join us for a lecture by Ed Schad, one of today’s leading voices in contemporary art and curatorial practice.   As a Curator and Publications Manager at The Broad in Los Angeles, Ed Schad has contributed to major exhibitions featuring artists such as Robert Therrien, Mickalene Thomas, William Kentridge, Takashi Murakami, and Shirin Neshat. His writing has appeared in leading publications including Art Review, Frieze, Flash Art, and The Brooklyn Rail, among others. In 2021, he was named a fellow at Los Angeles Institute for the Humanities, and in 2023 he published Letters Apart, a collaborative poetry project with painter Liat Yossifor.   Before the lecture, explore our specially curated Visiting Artist Bookshelf at UTA Libraries, @utalibraries featuring publications recommended by Ed Schad.   ✨ The Visiting Artist & Scholar Program at UTA brings leading artists, curators, and thinkers into direct conversation with students, offering public lectures, studio critiques, and workshops that are deeply integrated into the curriculum and contemporary cultural discourse.    This event is free and open to the public. #UTA #VisitingArtist #EdSchad #ArtLecture #ContemporaryArt

Shelfie of the Week 📚 ✨The VRC library shelves hold hundreds of unique books; many originally acquired through faculty recommendations, reflecting the depth and character of UTA Art & Art History program. Each week, a student selects a favorite title from the Visual Resource Collections to spotlight on our Instagram. This initiative is all about inviting our students to explore the VRC, spend time in the reading room, and make these incredible resources part of your creative and research process. This week’s pick: Promo 2: The Ultimate in Graphic Designer’s Self-Promotion By Lauri Miller (North Light Books, 1992) Selected by: Fatima Becerra, History Junior @fatimuchis__ “I am interested in how visual design communicates identity and historical context beyond traditional texts. I was surprised by how each piece in this book reflects not just personal branding, but also broader cultural trends in design. This connects to my history coursework by showing how visual materials can serve as primary sources that reveal social values, aesthetics, and professional practices in each period.” 📍Available in the VRC Reading Room, 2109 Fine Arts Building Stop by and explore what else is waiting on the shelf. Student-selected. Faculty-curated. From the VRC Bookshelf. #VRCShelfie #UTArthistory #UTAArt #ResearchInProcess

This week’s pick: WILD: Endangered Animals in Living Motion. A photicular book by Dan Kainen & Kathy Wollard (2017) Selected by: Janet Perla Medina, Criminology Freshman @jxnett.idk “This book feels like a tiny art show starring pandas, tigers, and other supermodels of the wild. I love how the photographs aren’t just still images but have a motion effect that makes them feel alive. This book in a sweet way reminds me that crime doesn’t just affect people; it also impacts these adorable little creatures of the wild, and that protecting them matters too.” 📍Available in the VRC Reading Room, 2109 Fine Arts Building Stop by and explore what else is waiting on the shelf. Robinson & Lawrence Davidson (Collectors Press, 1998) Selected by: Fatima Becerra, History Junior @fatimuchis__ “Pulp Culture: The Art of Fiction Magazines captured by attention because I was curious about magazine art and how it was used to attract readers. I was surprised by all the colorful covers and how – regardless of the genre, weather action, horror, adventure, or romance - they consistently use striking color to capture attention. In the future, if I am doing research on American media from the 1800s to the 1900s, this could be a valuable resource to study the stories, fears, and interests that were popular in America at that time.” 📍Available in the VRC Reading Room, 2109 Fine Arts Building Stop by and explore what else is waiting on the shelf.
