After two years of sustained student advocacy, we’ve received a formal response from the NSW Minister for Transport.
2024: 21,000+ students signed a petition calling for transport concessions for international and part-time students.
2025: A further 8,723 signatures were lodged through the NSW Parliament.
The Minister has confirmed that Transport for NSW will explore expanding concession or discount options to student groups currently excluded, in line with IPART’s 2025–2028 Opal Fares recommendations.
This marks the first positive policy signal in over a decade.
Led by SUPRA and @src_usyd , supported by @usu.usyd and student unions across New South Wales — including @uts_students_association (University of Technology Sydney), @unswpgc (UNSW Postgraduate Council), @wupa.uow (University of Wollongong), @unsa.uon (University of Newcastle), and @westernsydneyusrc (Western Sydney University) — and coordinated by the International Students Representative Council of Australia @isrc.australia (ISRC).

Today is International Day Against LGBTQIA+ Discrimination (IDAHOBIT).
This date marks the 1990 decision by the World Health Organization to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder. Since then, IDAHOBIT has become a global moment to raise awareness of the violence and discrimination still faced by LGBTQIA+ people, and to honour the strength and resilience of our communities in the ongoing fight for dignity, freedom and justice.
This year’s theme, ‘At the heart of democracy’, reminds us that democracy is about more than just institutions or elections. It’s also about whether people are able to live safely, participate openly in public life, and belong in the communities around them. A truly democratic society must make space for people of all genders and sexualities to exist freely and with dignity.
As Queer Officer at SUPRA, I believe universities should be places where all students can participate fully and safely as themselves. This IDAHOBIT, we invite you to be part of the community where dignity, inclusion and equality are at the heart of campus life and democracy itself.

Usyd has proposed to remove Study vacation (STUVAC) from the semester calendar. Instead, they propose to start the final exam period without giving students a week’s break from classes. This proposal will be considered at a meeting on next Tuesday, 19 May.
