Happy Graduation to Tim, Eli, and Lyndon!!! These three have been so instrumental to the @usmsaxophone studio’s success. I looked forward to their session with me every single week! To list their collective contributions would easily spam social media to the end. I’m so proud to know each of them and can’t wait to see what their future holds. I’ll miss each of them dearly. Thank you three for putting up with me!

🕊️ Takashi Yoshimatsu: Saxophone Concerto “Cyber Bird”
Composed in 1994 for virtuoso Nobuya Sugawa, Cyber Bird is one of Takashi Yoshimatsu’s most daring and technically demanding works. Subtitled a “triple concerto,” the piece imagines an electronic bird soaring through cyberspace—an image inspired in part by the composer’s sister, whose final wish was to be reborn as a bird.
Across three movements, the saxophone leads a journey through color, grief, and wind, blending classical writing with strong jazz influences. With piano, percussion, and soloist at the forefront, the orchestra becomes a shimmering backdrop to this bold and expressive sound world.
🎷 Preston Davis, winner of the William T. Gower Concerto Competition, will perform Cyber Bird with the University of Southern Mississippi Symphony Orchestra.
