WATCH: Since 2008, we have been trying to break Israel’s illegal blockade of Palestinians in Gaza.
Human rights attorney, former chairperson of the Free Gaza Movement since 2008, and current member of the Freedom Flotilla organizing committee,
@huwaida.arraf , tells us how the movement was born and walks us through the history of the flotilla missions up to 2024.
The Freedom Flotilla is a grassroots people-to-people solidarity movement made up of campaigns and initiatives from across the world, working together to challenge Israel’s illegal blockade of Gaza and affirm the rights and freedom of the Palestinian people.
In 2008, two small fishing boats successfully reached the port of Gaza, becoming the first boats in more than 40 years to arrive without Israeli permission. Four additional missions reached Gaza before the 2010 attack on the Mavi Marmara, when the Israeli military raided the flotilla in international waters, killing 10 volunteers, injuring dozens more, and imprisoning hundreds of human rights defenders.
Despite attacks, sabotage, arrests, and repression, flotilla missions have continued because Palestinians in Gaza are still living under blockade and international solidarity does not end when governments fail to act.
From the Mavi Marmara to the Women’s Boat to Gaza, from Gaza’s Ark to Al Awda, volunteers across generations and continents have continued to sail in solidarity with the Palestinian people.
Please continue supporting our volunteer efforts through our campaign initiatives via the link in our bio. We will keep organizing, sailing, and resisting until the blockade is ended and Palestine is free.
