The BonaVista Revolving Cocktail Lounge--be there on Sunday, 5/17, for an informal club meetup!
Seen here in 1977 as captured by renowned photographer Wayne Thom, the BonaVista is one of the only spaces in the Bonaventure to retain its original name and function (though sadly not its original STUNNING decor). Look at that lighting! The mirrored inner wall! Those deep red (or maybe brown?) upholstered booths and carpet. THE CEILING AND THE CARPET ARE THE SAME COLOR. And the view--not a tall building in sight!
Come DRINK IN THE BEST CIRCLES and experience LA's only rotating/revolving bar, truly an endangered species of drinking establishment. I'll be there around 5:30pm, swing by and enjoy the impeccably unique views and vibes!
Red elevator only!

Excited and honored to read at this 7hr marathon of #bobflanngan’s visceral, transgressive, carnal, unflinching, tender poetry! A commemoration of the 30th anniversary of his death and the extraordinary cultural impact of his and collaborator #shereerose’s art and lives.
My slot is 5:55-6:00pm at the @humanresourcesla live event. Readers will be joining from around the world by Zoom. There will be a You Tube live stream to join in, link posted by the 15th. This labor of love has been thoughtfully organized by Mae Howard @swamp_witch__
In conjunction with this event, on May 14th from 7-8:30pm is a curator’s tour by Quetzal Arévalo for exhibition NEED ME, or, (de)mystifying the myth of the #modernprimitive, which will include a special focus on performance artists Bob Flanagan and Sheree Rose! At the USC Libraries @usclibraries and presented with ONE Archives @onearchivesusc .
Masks are required for this tour.

a decade
is a long time by any metric
I’ve spent ten years on this
complex piece, on and off
it is only the play it is today
because of the artists who
have leant their talents to
the development processes
it is only the play it is today
because of the brave funders
and partners who supported
a controversial work like this
I am indebted to the archivists,
dramaturgs, actors, translators,
interviewees and producers who
had faith in this (long) process
and to the team who created a
truly powerful and provocative
production within which to share
the work with audeinces in 2026
from berlin to babelsberg, from
glasgow to london, from new york
to los angeles, from cleveland to
cologne - it has been a wild ride
so - a decade is a long time
and tonight is first preview

[The videos of gaming systems are a sample of the availability of older consoles.]
Since establishing its gaming resources in 2008, the Cinematic Arts Library is proud to support the Interactive Media Division at the School of Cinematic Arts. The library features hundreds of games from the NES to the PS4. Games circulate outside the library, except for cartridges. We have consoles for playing cartridge-based games. The library has game stations featuring the PS4, PS4 VR, PS3, and the Nintendo Switch. We are ready to connect consoles, such as the Xbox360 to the Xbox One, if this is what’s needed for your research. Older, retro consoles are available to teach about the old ways of gaming. The game collection is searchable via ALMA at https://libraries.usc.edu/. You’ll find all of your results under “other material.” These gaming resources are provided by donors, so if you have gaming materials (games, consoles, etc.) you no longer use and would like to donate to higher education, please contact us at [email protected]. We need AV and AC components for some older consoles, so if you have questions about playing the Sega Dreamcast or some Nintendo consoles, please email us before arrival to ensure they’ll be ready.

Oh hey, it’s tax day. Usually my reminder to file is that gnawing sense of unease in the pit of my stomach that starts around mid-February and lasts until I get my refund. Back in the ‘60s, the feds would light up windows on the south side of the Spring Street Courthouse in downtown LA, to remind you to “File Early,” “File Now,” or whatever it’s reminding you to do in the third photo (my guess is that it was shot halfway to “File Now,” when the top and bottom floors had already been lit but the middle ones were still dark).
So here’s a mystery: the windows lit up on the tower section of City Hall are nearly identical in photos 2 & 3. Both photos were taken in 1961, but they’re taken from different vantage points, and held by different institutions. Could they both have been taken by Cliff Wesselmann on the same night? Or were the same city employees staying late at work throughout tax season?
Both the Spring Street Courthouse and City Hall are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In fact the Courthouse is a National Historic Landmark – that’s one level historic-er than the National Register!

Join Mary Ann Pacheco (Council Member of the City of Whittier and USC Alumna), César López (Chair and Professor of Chicana and Chicano Studies Department, San Diego Mesa College and USC Alumnus), and Laura Dominguez (NEH Postdoctoral Scholar & Research Associate, EMSI LA2026, and USC Alumna) for a LA2026 conversation on April 8.
The discussion will focus on Chicano/a activism and the establishment of El Centro Chicano at USC in the 1970s, in response to items on display in a new exhibit in Doheny Memorial Library. One of the items on display is a reproduction of a mural painted in 1976 by GOEZ Studios on the outside wall of El Centro Chicano to mark the US Bicentennial, with a distinctly Chicano focus. There is also a video of the Festival de Flor Y Canto hosted at USC in 1973 to celebrate Chicano/a poets and literary voices.
Register on our LA2026 website to attend (link in bio).
