Students from the College of Medicine showcased their point‑of‑care ultrasound skills at the SONOlympiad on April 19 in Saskatoon. 🩺 This event brought together undergraduate medical students - and for the first time, Master of Physician Assistant (MPAS) students - for learning and friendly competition at #USask’s Clinical Learning and Resource Centre. Eight teams advanced through hands‑on skills stations, with the top three moving on to a Jeopardy‑style final. 🏆 Congratulations to the top teams: 1st place: Gain Changers (MPAS students Madison Mueller, Mikayla Robinson and Rachel Rosin) 2nd place: FAST and Furry-ous 3rd place: FastScan Students came well prepared, demonstrating impressive ultrasound knowledge and lots of creativity in team names and costumes. Thank you to all participants for your energy and enthusiasm! Huge thanks to Drs. Linden Kolbenson, Meghan Garner, Michael Voralia Jesse May (Anesthesia) and Olivia Friesen (Adult Critical Care) for helping as station judges. Also, thank you to the USask Ultrasound Student Interest Group for their help in organzing this year’s event. A special thank you to Dr. Paul Olszynski for hosting the event for the past 10 years. #USaskMedicine #USaskMed #USaskMPAS

Haley Scheck grew up in rural Saskatchewan and is completing her third-year medical clerkship in Swift Current. She says her rural training has provided her with valuable learning experiences and exposure to a wide range of skills. “The data tells us that physicians are much more likely to build a career and practice where they train, so it’s a great opportunity to improve recruitment and retention in rural Saskatchewan. My experiences in Swift Current so far have been really influential in helping me decide where I want to complete my residency and practice one day.” With new funding from the Government of Saskatchewan our college is expanding medical training capacity. Twenty new undergraduate medical seats and 10 residency positions will help educate more learners and support the province's future health‑care workforce. #USaskMed #USaskMedicine #USaskSLIC

Today is Red Dress Day. May 5 is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit people. Across the country, red dresses are hung in public spaces to honour those who are missing and those who have been lost. USask medical students Rebecca Seifried (Gakijiwanong Anishinaabe Nation) and Terri Thunder (Thunderchild First Nation) designed a Red Dress Day shirt rooted in that same spirit of remembrance. The design features handprints, northern lights, and figures standing together, with the Cree phrase “ē wīcihacik ka miyō kīwēcik” meaning “guide the spirits home.” People across the USask College of Medicine and Department of Family Medicine are wearing the shirts today in solidarity. “We wanted to acknowledge those who passed but also acknowledge they’re safe with ancestors now.” 🔗 Learn more via the link in our bio.

Daniel Clark (he/him), co-president of the Family Medicine Club, speaks about the group’s initiatives and future, sharing his thoughts on the family medicine scene within Canada and challenging myths about practice. “We think it's a great fulfilling career,” said Clark. “So that's something that we try to promote…As someone who has seen and experienced firsthand the impact of family medicine doctors in a small rural community, [family doctors] definitely can be pillars of the community. It's very important work.” Want to read more? Check out Stories from Our Students. Link in bio 🔗
