We had a wonderful event in Regina, where approximately 175 people turned out, including USask Law alumni, retired judiciary, members of the Regina bar, and community members.
The highlight was an engaging speech from Ralph Goodale (LLB’72), former Regina MP and cabinet minister and newly minted member of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Advisory Committee on Canada-US Economic Relations. Mr. Goodale provided a realistic assessment of global affairs and reinforced the importance of a strong relationship between Canada and the US, even while Canada continues to advance its standing on the world stage.
Dean Martin Phillipson updated everyone on recent happenings at the college, spotlighting the successes of our students and grads. The sense of unity and USask Law pride in the room was gratifying and we are already looking forward to a return trip to Regina!
This event was the John A. Stack Memorial Lecture, presented by the McKercher LLP Lecture Series. We are grateful to the Stack family and McKercher LLP for their support.
#USaskLaw alum Emma Neufeld (JD’25) has been selected for the highly competitive Supreme Court of Canada Law Clerk Program for the 2027–2028 term.
Currently clerking at the Court of Appeal for Saskatchewan, Neufeld’s path to the Supreme Court was shaped by her strong academic record, bilingual legal training through the college’s French Common Law Option, and mentorship from professors and judges who supported her throughout the application process.
“It’s such a unique opportunity that I knew I couldn’t pass it up. I wanted to throw my hat in the ring and see if it was something that I could achieve,” she said.
Congratulations, Emma, on this career milestone and on joining a distinguished group of alumni who have clerked at Canada’s highest court.

Join us in congratulating Brody Burr, this year’s recipient of the #USaskLaw Outstanding 1L Mooter Award.
“It is hands-on experiences like these that I think are truly valuable for preparing us for the future of lawyering, and a great chance to experiment with oral argumentation,” said Burr.
First-year moots are a milestone at USask Law. They mark a defining moment as students take their first steps in oral advocacy.

The 14th annual Dean’s Forum on Access to Justice and Dispute Resolution brought together #USaskLaw students, community stakeholders, and justice system leaders for a day of collaboration and impactful discussion.
As part of a unique upper-year course led by Brea Lowenberger, students research, design, and support real-world initiatives to strengthen access to justice. On Dean's Forum Day, they present their work to key policy and decision-makers, helping shape plans for implementation.
“It was one of the most rewarding experiences of law school, challenging us to move beyond theory and think critically about what real change in the justice system looks like,” said third-year law student Molly Waldman.

Kiauna Cote, Kiera Munroe, and Jaylynn Stonechild did an excellent job representing #USaskLaw at the Kawaskimhon National Aboriginal Moot Competition.
Coached by David Werner, the team described the experience as incredibly meaningful. The competition offered a valuable opportunity to engage with complex legal issues involving Indigenous rights, sovereignty, consultation, and consent in the context of major development projects.
A highlight for the team was successfully advancing its proposed amendment during negotiations. Their advocacy demonstrated a commitment to protecting Indigenous rights and ensuring that development decisions consider the wellbeing of the next seven generations.
The team was grateful for the many new connections made at the event and expressed sincere thanks to Coach David for his teachings and support.
Congratulations to the team on their hard work and dedication!

This year's team was Veronica Dirk-Pothier, Grace Semko, Summer Baier, and Lucas Brown. They were coached by Thomas Hynes and Zachary Carter.
Each team member delivered thoughtful and engaging oral arguments before panels of guest judges on the case of R. v. I.M. and issues related to the youth criminal sentencing regime.
