Fundraiser for our beloved Mirca Morera (1977 - 2026)🌹
In January, our community lost Mirca. She founded Save Latin Village, and dedicated her life advocating for the rights of Latin Americans in the UK and beyond. As her community, we’re in deep grief over the loss of our dear friend.
We’re raising funds to support Mirca’s family as they navigate this difficult time. Please read more about Mirca’s legacy and donate via the gofundme page. Follow the link in our bio.
Rest in power nuestra querida Mirca 🕊️
You’ll forever inspire us to build better worlds.
Deep love & gratitude,
Javie, Jacobo and Stefania @savelatinvillage@wards_corner@unit38

Hackney stand up!!!
Congratulations and big ups to @hackneygreenparty
With change in the air, we’re excited at the prospect of transformation, not least that of Colvestone School!!!
Though surrounded by high-street chains and large scale multi-storey developments, Colvestone Corner will truly represent the Borough and put community first.
Spearheaded by Black-Led and Global Majority Organisations, we’re proud to celebrate Hackney’s rich culture, curating an intersectional space where everyone is welcome.
“This administration is yours because the people of Hackney own Hackney and it’s time to take it back. That’s why one of my first acts will be to do a full investigation into who owns Hackney, its buildings, its land, to begin getting these spaces back to the communities who desperately need them.”
— Zoë Garbett, newly elected Mayor of Hackney

@colvestonecorner_ is a community led proposal to bring Dalston’s former Colvestone Primary School back into public use. Transforming 24,500 sq ft into a multi use hub for culture, wellbeing, learning and enterprise, the project creates accessible, intergenerational space for young people, families and older residents to come together.
Rooted in Hackney’s long history as a place of arrival and belonging, Colvestone Corner is intentionally centred on and celebrates Black and Global Majority communities. With lifetimes of lived experience of living and working in Hackney, the collective includes @stour_trust , @unit38_ and @ubeleinitiative , and working alongside programme partners including @rise.365 and @raceequalityfoundation
The proposal includes dedicated spaces for young people, families and older residents, alongside a training kitchen, affordable workspace and shared social spaces, as well as public facing spaces such as a market café, global garden and a cultural gallery and archive, creating welcoming places for everyday use, exchange and celebration.
Too often, communities are sidelined by development and pushed out by gentrification. Colvestone Corner sets out a different model, one rooted in long term stewardship, community wealth building and collective care, demonstrating how Hackney’s diversity can be sustained and built on for generations to come.

We need more projects like Stirchley Co-operative Development, where residents and workers are put front and centre in deciding the future of our high streets.
We are both actively working to bring SCD into community ownership and continuing our efforts to expand our model across Stirchley and Birmingham at large.
When McDonald’s wanted to build a drive-through in the heart of Stirchley, our community said no, and we gathered them to decide a better future for that plot of land.
Along with 150 + local residents and workers, and @unit38_ facilitating sessions, we developed The Stirchley Community Plan on Hazelwell Lane; 60 affordable family homes, community-owned shops and leisure spaces, a car-free courtyard garden, and a rooftop sports pitch.
Designed by residents, for residents, this land should build community wealth.
Want to help make it happen?

HOUSING AND PLANNING ROUNDTABLE 2025
Using architecture and the law for community organising
Back in October 2025, we organised a roundtable day of discussions for organisers, architects and residents fighting for housing justice at Pelican House, with the best biryani from Kolapata for lunch.
The day ran across three sessions:
Resisting Demolition and Displacement with PILC, SHAPE and GMLC discussing Judicial Reviews, planning appeals and campaigns.
Disrepair, Fire Safety and Retrofit with Nag’s Head residents and Anthony Gold Solicitors discussing
Community Planning and Building Alternatives with Darren Ward, Urban Imprint and Pablo Sendra.
As Unit 38, we introduced the history of Community Technical Aid Centres, Building Physics for the People and the history of urban policies that have lead us to our current situation, and how we can find a way out of it.
The programme uses an image from the New Architecture Movement (NAM) Handbook from 1978, as inspiration for a People's Design Service.
To more of this in 2026.

#6 on A People’s Design Service with David McEwen / Unit 38
12 February
1 - 2 PM London time
online, link in bio
Join us for the 6th conversation! We will discuss the spatial practices that emerge from a commitment to supporting urban struggles, everyday life, and emancipation.
From 38th unit, a space above a nail salon in the Latin Village market in North London, to UNIT 38, a practice oriented towards using community-led planning processes to support the political agency of the groups fighting their dispersal due to gentrification-led masterplanning processes, David McEwen will be discussing what are people’s plans and how the institutional and spatial innovation come together in their work. Is A People’s Design Practice one of the possible forms of practising minorplanning and how to carve the new spatial imaginaries in the context of a highly globalised real estate context, such as London and the rest of the UK.
David McEwen is a founding member of UNIT 38. Unit 38 is a workers’ cooperative focused on community-led developments operating at the intersection of low-carbon architecture, democratic ownership, economic policy and political action. They have worked on a range of community planning projects across the UK which emphasise retrofitting, cooperative ownership and community wealth building. They offer design services to working class communities who are typically excluded from processes of urban change. While they don’t think architecture alone can address wider issues of societal inequality, it can demostrate viable alternative futures, which in turn can enable new political, economic and ecological possibilities. Consequently, UNIT 38 strives for a multi-disciplinary approach which enables communities and social movements to realise their own ambitions for neighbourhood change, through directly taking charge of the development process.

We’re excited to share the first look at our new stage location for 2026 🌴
We have been working on redesigning some of the spaces at Kala to make our dancefloors even more intimate and integrated with the environment.
This new space reimagines the previous Empire stage. It will have a clubbier feel with a lower DJ booth, and an open air setting with an unrestricted view of the mountain and the ocean ✨
To deliver this vision, we are collaborating with architectural cooperative Unit38. Their work is rooted in shared space, community and joy, which are the foundations behind the design of the new spaces and structures.
There are more exciting updates coming for 2026 and we look forward to sharing them with you in the coming weeks.
See you in June 🫶
Our co-founder David McEwen has been appointed as one of the Mayor’s Design Advocates!
Alongside many incredible architects and designers, friends old and new.
As advocates they champion inclusive, environmentally responsible, and community-led approaches to design across London.
