Naoki Yamashita

My 2-year working visa is finally coming to an end this month. I’m planning to spend the summer in London or somewhere in Europe, then head back to Japan around the end of summer or early autumn. Since I won’t be able to work anymore after this month, I’d love to help out with any photography if you need it. I can shoot portraits, fashion, food, and product photography (especially cosmetics - I actually did that for nearly 5 years in Japan, though I’ve never really shared it here). I can send over my portfolio if needed. I’ve met so many great people here, and before I leave, I’d really like to not just hang out, but also share what I do through my work. So, If you’re working on any personal or creative projects and need a photographer, I’d be more than happy to collaborate. I’d love to create something meaningful and give back in some way. My photos are on the new issue of @grindmagazine Editor @hirotomi1201 ７月に撮影したJunction2、そしてそこで撮れたSoulwax、その後ロンドンで撮ったJamie Issacの写真がGrind Magazineに載りました。 去年の今頃に妙な縁で出会った冨手さんとの初仕事、偶然が重なり期待を遥かに越えたものになりました。 以下僕が綴った文章です。 13th October 当初のページ想定はフェスのレポート的なものになりそうだった。僕らが貰えるパスでどこまでできるかわからないから、行ってみてできることやりましょうと冨手さんと話して現場へ向かった。 イギリスに来てからパーティーやレイブに頻繁に行くようになり、この国にいる人が持つ音楽への熱狂や情熱を普段から感じていたから、そのエッセンスをなるべくキャッチしてページを作ろうと。ただの記録にするには時間も労力も勿体無いから。 まずは自分がその場に溶け込むこと。自分の待つエネルギーを人はちゃんとキャッチできる。とにかく初日は冨手さんと一緒に音楽を楽しんでバイブを掴むことに集中した。僕らはいろんな人と話したと思う。それがいい写真に導いてくれると信じていたから。ハイで突然話しかけてきた女の子、タバコをもらいに来てビールを買わせた男の子、隣で踊ってて何かが通じてハグした人たち。彼らは彼らなりの音楽の楽しみ方を知っているなと思った。そこに迷いはなく、純粋に音楽を楽しんでいる姿は美しかった。 フェスはとてもオープンな場所だと思う。性別、人種、年齢、すべてごちゃ混ぜ。何も関係なくいろんな人がいる。各々で自由に自由を楽しんでる。アルコール・ドラッグ、様々な欲望と共に人々は一日中踊っていた。僕はそれを取り巻く人間模様を撮りたかった。 初日が終わって冨手さんと写真を確認して、僕たちの作るページの方向性が見えた。二日目は残りのピースを集めるような感じだった。あとは僕らは楽しみながら写真を撮るだけ。二日目、とりあえず着いてすぐにドリンクチケットをもらって、バックステージのバーで乾杯した。フラフラ歩いていたら、日曜の大トリのSoul Waxの二人が話している姿が見えた。その週に自分の働いてるバーにステファンが来ていて、何か自分の直感でhey sirと声をかけた。彼は僕のことをすぐ認識して、撮影で来てると言ったら僕らのステージをどこからでも撮影していいよとパスをくれた。そして冨手さんの嗅覚も同じく働いて、インタビューするところまで漕ぎ着けた。そしてそれがjunction 2のページの前の4ページになった。僕は唯一ステージに上がって写真が撮れるフォトグラファーだった。 自分のイギリスでの生活と、これまでやってきた写真と、運が一つになった瞬間だった。フェスについてももっと書きたいことはあるけれど、これは自分にとって大きすぎる出来事だった。あそこに自分がいたことが全てを引き寄せたと思う。そんなわけで、冨手さんの素晴らしい文章と共に誌面を楽しんでください。

Kamasi Washington, Chu Kosama, Tokyo 2018 数時間前に出たカマシ・ワシントンのtiny deskのライブを観てとても感動してしまい、SSDの中に念のため入れてきたデータを掘り出して再現像。 メールを見返すとこの日は取材2件続きで、この前の撮影は惜しくも一昨年に亡くなってしまった小坂忠さんだった。今思うととんでもない一日だったのに、当時23歳の自分は全く重大さをわかっていなかったと思う。こんな良い撮影頂けてたこと本当に有難いことだった。 元々大好きだったカマシを撮れるってことで気合い入れて現場に臨んだけど、ビルボード東京の楽屋内で取材の時間がトータル20分しかなく、おまけに担当の人から彼を立たせてはダメと釘を刺されての撮影だった。インタビュー終わりに20秒ぐらい与えられ、目線あるカット数枚撮って帰った。気合い入れていく現場ほど上手くいかないことが多かった気がする。いい経験だった。あんまり言いたくはないけど、また撮影したい。 kamasiのオリジナル曲も大好きだけど、ドビュッシーの月の光のカバーがとにかく最高なので是非晴れた気分の良い日に。

@nodaharajuku × @julius.ernst.berlin Had a lovely time with beautiful people at @julius.ernst.berlin . It was such an amazing experience for me to work in a cool place with cool people. I had learned so many things during this period, especially prep for the dinner was really impressive. The process of making a “Dish” is completely different from what I thought. There were so many layers in one plate, sometimes it’s very simple, but sometimes it’s very complex. I found the beauty of making something new from scratch from this 4days of preparation. I hope I could make use of this experience for my next creation, not sure if it’s photography or not. But definitely I’ve got something special. I really appreciate for Noda-san giving me this opportunity to be there even I’m just a photographer. And also, thanks again people who’ve met me in Berlin. Be back soon definitely. Danke, ciao💚

無事に出国しました。出国間際に会ってくださった皆様、ありがとうございました。沢山お酒飲んで身体ボロボロです。。 ようやく一昨日ぐらいから実感が湧いてきて、今日の離陸する瞬間寂しさで泣きそうでした。音楽とか聴いたら今にも涙溢れそうだったので一時間ぐらい無音で過ごしてました。寂しいなー。 前にも書きましたが、ロンドンですることはまだ決めていません。自分の人間としての広がりを出すために色々なことをやってみようと思います。写真もチャンスがあればやろうと思ってます。当然不安なところもありますが、自分の新たな人生にとても期待を持っています。 がんばります！

ご報告。 直接お伝えできなかった方々、すみません。 ６月からイギリスに移住します。今の予定だと２年後までいる予定です。 一度手に入れたものを手放し、もう一度人生のこと・これからの暮らしのことを考え直してみようと思います。写真からも少し離れることになります。 東京に出てきて約10年間、たくさんの愛に触れて仕事できてきたこと誇りに思います。本当にありがとうございました。
