Underground Kampala

In a country where techno is scarce, Underground Kampala is creating a haven for dedicated fans. From monthly pop-up raves held in hidden nooks around Uganda during lockdown, @undergroundkampala has since transformed into a booming party pushing its founders’ love of techno to local ravers while embracing a DIY ethos and centring the needs of its community. Underground Kampala platforms local techno producers and DJs and connects them with international artists, run by founder Richard O’doi and a collective of other DJs, sound practitioners, lighting designers and producers who share a love of dance music. “Kampala is very laidback, but also there are a lot of stigmas around raves and music like techno,” says O’doi. “In East Africa for the past few years, electronic music has had a big development. We want to focus on techno to give a light to the techno talent in the region.” In a 2022 interview, we spoke to Richard O’doi about the stigmas associated with raves in Uganda, the international friendships forged over safari trips, and the development of Underground Kampala.
