“A FORM OF LOSS (MY COLORS CHANGE)” (Excerpts): Recent Pieces of Found Footage Magic, Video Poetry & Distorted Worlds. - I’m developing and disintegrating simultaneously. The early morning hours tell me so. They’re worried I’ve not yet slept, but I can’t break away from the analog warmth soaking into the fibers of a cold reality. The story becomes increasingly cohesive, the messages continue to translate, and my spiritual wounds are less inflamed. Glitch art is a mirror. It mirrors my experience as a blind person with hearing loss. The world arrives to my brain in a broken manner after being corrupted by my faulty senses. It is genuine hell navigating the world like this. Glitch art is a mirror. For me, it is not an “aesthetic” or a trendy filter but rather a storytelling mechanism. A way to deliver the experience of tension, fragility and volatility of my world. “See as I see”. “WHAT DISAPPEARANCE DOES TO US:” Found Footage Video Poetry / Love Letter / Grief Meditation - This is a piece of video art dedicated to the grief I continue to experience over the loss of my mother. It encapsulates nostalgia, memory distortion, and spiritual distress related to the loss of a loved one. I sampled found footage from VHS tapes and processed them through authentic analog glitches. Personal writing excerpts from poems & diary entries have also been layered using a video titler. The results are displayed on a CRT TV and rescanned with a mirrorless camera and arranged in editing software. All visuals were achieved in an analog video ecosystem and no digital effects are applied. This took about a week to complete and upwards of 24 hours of actual time spent. I’ve built quite a collection of them at this point, and this tape, which I’ve recently acquired, has some incredible footage that I wanted to share. Enjoy. “IT’S SOMETHING OF AN AFFLICTION” Machine-Sculpture Self Portrait (2024): I am deeply moved by the idea of mirroring the self through analog video machines, utilizing their warmth, character, and physical interfaces. By using an array of gear (nearly every piece in my collection) I built a system that cycled through various states of mind & physicality that were displayed across a set of screens. All screen and gear were encased in an industrial rack mount system. Each mind/physical state was represented by a video patch containing unique glitches, poetry, video effects, audio reactivity, and/or video arrangements. It was important to me for this sculpture to possess a kinetic element, an independent movement, a representation of “breath” pulsing through its circuits. Introducing live camera feeds allowed me to do this. The live feeds cycled in tandem with the effects, creating constant, self generated motion. The live feeds also acted as a mirror, allowing the onlookers (myself and the audience) to see themselves in it. This invited introspection and incorporated an organic layer to the mechanical essence of the sculpture. Across 13 screens, 5 live feed cameras, 17 patches, 20+ pieces of hardware and a stream of human beings, my sculpture came to life. Thanks to everyone who came out to witness this monstrosity of a project in person and to those who supported from afar.
