After the 6.9 earthquake hit Cebu, communities were left without power or communication. The damage was devastating, and sadly, lives were lost. Through our connectEMERGENCIES programme, unconnected.org quickly stepped in to help. Together with @apadph , @sparkwaveph and JRJ Enterprise Solutions, a local ISP partnered with @dictgovph , we deployed satellite kits that turned schools and community centres into emergency connectivity hubs. With speeds reaching 310 Mbps, responders had the reliable internet they needed, coordinating relief, reconnecting families, and keeping vital information flowing. This meant first responders could act faster, families could reach loved ones, and communities stayed informed even when infrastructure was down. Local volunteers were trained to keep the systems running because resilience starts on the ground. Funded by the @isoc_foundation ation, this work is part of our bigger mission: making sure that in moments of crisis, connectivity isn’t just a service, it's a lifeline. #CebuEarthquake #Philippines #DisasterResponse #EmergencyConnectivity #DigitalLifeline #connectEMERGENCIES #ConnectivityForAll #HumanitarianTech #CommunityResilience #APADPh

We are honoured to have contributed to the development and launch of our National Strategy for Community Networks, a collaborative milestone that lays the foundation for more inclusive, locally driven connectivity across the country. This strategy is the product of extensive engagement with a diverse group of stakeholders, including community networks, civil society organisations, government representatives, researchers, and technical partners. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Association for Progressive Communications, LocNet, Zenzeleni Community Networks, as well as the community networks, network leaders, funders, and policy stakeholders whose guidance, expertise, and on-the-ground knowledge have been instrumental in shaping this strategy from its inception through to validation. This is not just a document, it is a commitment to community-led connectivity models that respond to real needs and drive meaningful digital inclusion. We look forward to continuing to work together to bring this strategy to life. In Northern Malawi, access to fast, reliable internet is no longer a distant goal. Through the support of the Internet Society Foundation’s BOLT Grant Program, we connected over 70 schools and 63 communities using a model that prioritises both access and long-term sustainability. Schools have become digital hubs, extending affordable internet to surrounding communities through locally managed mesh Wi-Fi networks. Families can now access the internet at a fraction of previous costs, while local entrepreneurs and ISPs ensure the network remains community-owned and resilient. This initiative has reached more than 600,000 people and empowered over 68,000 students to learn, dream, and thrive in a connected world. In the lead-up to National Disaster Resilience Month, unconnected.org is honored to partner with the Philippine Disaster Resilience Foundation (PDRF) to support Free Use of Connectivity Platforms for Emergency Communications. This partnership reinforces our commitment to digital equity—especially in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs) that are most vulnerable to disasters and often underserved in digital infrastructure. Together with PDRF, and in alignment with the Department of Information and Communications Technology - Philippines (DICT) and Office of Civil Defense (OCD), we’re advancing the goals of the Emergency Telecommunications Cluster (ETC). Backed by the Internet Society Foundation, this initiative also includes a Disaster Connectivity Course to equip responders with the tools and knowledge they need in the field. In partnership with unconnected.org, Lux Solana has brought reliable internet access to Tagubanhan Island, a remote fisherfolk community in the Visayas region of the Philippines. Powered by Low-Earth Orbit satellite technology, the connectivity now supports over 500 devices, with access centered around key community hubs like the local market, primary school, and sari-sari store. This initiative is a powerful reminder that no community is too small—or too remote—to benefit from the opportunities that come with being connected. 👉 Read the full story: /blog/beyond-nets-bringing-online-opportunities-to-a-fisherfolk-community #DigitalInclusion #ConnectTheUnconnected #TechForGood #RemoteConnectivity #CommunityEmpowerment #SustainableDevelopment #GIDA #Philippines #Unconnected #PartnershipForImpact
