Yesterday I arrived in Montreal as I got selected for the
@mutekmontreal AI Ecologies Lab residency, along with 5 other groups, to develop sustainable tools and applications for AI. When MUTEK made an open call for artist to fulfill this sustainability gap, I did not hesitate to submit a proposal to build energy counters as a foundational metric for operating any computing infrastructure, period. This is how my project, āWattsupā, was born, with the singular goal to: āshine a light an artificial intelligence power usageā and stimulate transparency in the sector.
Letās be honest, todayās AI landscape is mostly a blackbox full of promises, leading tech companies are eager to share that there was 1 million requests to ChatGPT in a single day but nobody shares how many watt/hour their service is consuming or what energy mix they are running on. I am not here to say whether it is good or bad, but rather to shine an objective light on what is really happening underneath. So my goal is to simply answer this question in the most accurate way possible: what is real impact of AI today on our planet? If Sam Altman and all of the other big tech CEO are not willing to be transparent about their companies impact on Earth, then someone eventually has to do it.
Fortunately, there are many allies who paved the way to create transparency in this new technological realm, with which Wattsup intends to integrate and collaborate to shine a light on actual power usage in popular open source AI tools. For example, CodeCarbon allows you to measure local AI workload and report on the real watt/hour usage of your machines. On the other hand, EcoLogits, from GenAI Impact, allows you estimate the potential energy cost of executing AI workloads on remote services from OpenAI and Anthropic.
I am excited to share the result of this work at the MUTEK residency in the coming weeks as it culminates to the final showcase at the MUTEK Forum on August 20 to 22. Many thanks to
@sarahmackenzie and her team for the opportunity and all their efforts for furthering and stimulating sustainability in AI.
