To kick off Pacific Language Weeks, UC student Pearl is teaching us some Rotuman words 👀✨
This year’s theme:
“Ȧf’ȧk, putua, a’pumuạ’ȧk ma rak’ȧk ‘os fäega ma ‘os ag fak Rotuma, la se maoen ‘e ‘os tore”
“Treasure, nurture and teach our Rotuman language and culture so it may live on through generations.” ❤️

Last week, our @ucsustain ran an edible campus tour. Snacking their way around school and finishing with bay leaf and herbal tea at @waiutuutugarden 🌱

The unarmed stick insect (Acanthoxyla inermis) of Aotearoa New Zealand can reproduce without males, a real survival superpower called parthenogenesis 👀🌿
You can learn more intriguing bug facts in “Six-legged Ghosts: The Insects of Aotearoa”, authored by UC grad + illustrator Lily Duval. The book brings insects out of the background with stunning artwork and ideas, revealing why their quiet disappearance matters. Published by Canterbury University Press, this beautifully illustrated book invites us to look closer — and maybe even fall in love with the insects we once overlooked 🐜✨

‘Keep in a Cool Place: The first winter at Vanda Station, Antarctica’ (CUP, 2022) has earned authors Allen J. Riordan and Simon Cutfield the American Meteorological Society’s Louis J. Battan Author’s Award (Adult) 🏆 From the extremes of Antarctica to a global stage in Houston, their work shines a light on the complexity of our planet and the dedication it takes to understand it.

Did you know cutting-edge earthquake sensors have been installed in Christchurch’s new @onenewzealandstadium ? 🏟
The cutting-edge earthquake sensors at One New Zealand Stadium were developed by UC researchers Professor Daniel Nilsson, Emeritus Professor Roger Nokes and Dr Gabriele Granello, with UC alumni Andrew Logie joining the team as an independent director.
Born from lessons from the Canterbury earthquakes, SenseiQ measures inter-storey drift and damage, with real-time data helping engineers assess building safety faster after a quake.
Professor Nilsson says it’s exciting to have a landmark facility adopting the technology. “We’re delighted that the new stadium – a symbol of Christchurch’s post-quake recovery – is now equipped with our device.”
