From childhood games of hide and seek to cutting-edge augmented reality 🎮
UC researcher Yasas Wickramasinghe is reimagining how we play by designing multiplayer location-based AR games that connect people in real time.
Through his PhD at UC’s HIT Lab NZ, Yasas explored how immersive tech can join remote players and places, shaping how they experience presence, decision-making and engagement in virtual environments.
His work has led to six international publications and presentations at conferences like IEEE VR, with support from the Niantic Developer Fund and recognition across the global AR community.
Now a Postdoctoral Research Fellow Yasas is collaborating with a Leading Tech Company Japan, continuing to push the boundaries of player experience.
From starting his PhD remotely in Sri Lanka during lockdowns to building a research career in Christchurch, his journey reflects a passion for creating meaningful, real-world impact through technology.

Our @ucnz_productdesign students put NZ wool to the test by exploring it as a material for product design with support from @nzcampaignforwool
The biggest realisation? Materials don’t behave like they do on a screen. Wool flexes, wood has grain, ceramics crack. Once students started designing with the material, not against it, their ideas clicked.
It’s a fresh look at how natural materials can shape future design in Aotearoa.
Less theory, more lit⚡️
